As an attentive observer of social trends and changing lifestyles, Peugeot has used its knowledge to design a 207, full of character, powered by state-of-the-art engines promising great drive ability, low fuel consumption high levels of environmental protection.

In line with the diversification of the many products offered in its segment, the 207 continues to evolve into numerous body types, the strong personality of each exercising its own captivating power.

So, this Spring, which marks the first anniversary of the three and five door hatchback, has seen the 207 range enriched by first the 207 CC, the classic re-invention of modern open top driving, then by the sporty RC and at the Geneva Motor Show, the 207 SW Outdoor concept car showing a glimpse of a new addition to the range.

Under its «Motor Show finery», the 207 SW Outdoor presented a dynamic and original style, a larger exterior and interior, appealing interior light and great versatility, including features very different from those of the hatchback from which it has borrowed much more than the design of the front …

In response to the increasing awareness of:

* Maximising available time, the need to under take many different activities and greater leisure time.
* Ease of use and adaptability to accommodate many different situations and solutions.
* Comfort and organisation of space.
* Well being.
* Sportiness.

Three separate solutions were created, all of which contain the genes of a true SW, and have been incorporated in what was then no more than a concept car.

The created concept car full of promise, led to the creation of three 207 SWs each designed to meet a different challenge. These three 207 SWs are each indispensable instruments of a flexible, mobile and «multi-active» lifestyle which can adapt too many different situations, as well as to meet the requirements of many different leisure pursuits.

The first, the 207 SW, provides great versatility enabling users to easily access its «magic» rear modularity, storage space and increased load area, combined with all the clever features which will enable the user to enjoy many different experiences due to the exceptional practicality.

Its vast panoramic glass roof, fitted with an electric sunblind, provides versions on which it is fitted with high levels of interior brightness, a feature which was lacking on the 206 SW.

Elegant and dynamic, the 207 SWs share both the exterior and interior with the 207 hatchback.

Full of Off-Road spirit

With the need to provide solutions to many different uses and the increasing popularity of outdoor leisure pursuits, the motoring world, has had to create a range of non-conventional body types such as: the Sport Utility Vehicle, Multi Purpose Vehicle and Cross Overs, which illustrates an increasing demand for vehicles which are functional, fun, practical and full of personality.

The 207 SW Outdoor follows this trend and defines itself as a dynamic «off-road leisure» vehicle with a strong stylistic personality. It should be thought of as a "leisure" companion; ready to facilitate mobility, with a wide variety of applications... in short it can broaden «possibilities».

A bold exterior style

Based on the 207 SW with its sleek and slender design, combining original shaped glazed areas, the 207 SW Outdoor can be equipped, according to version and country, with:

* a 1.106 m2 panoramic glass roof with an electric sunblind;
* «shaped» roof bars with an avant-garde design;
* dark tinted rear side windows, high-level rear quarter lights and rear tailgate glass;
* a "sport" front styling with an aluminium air intake grille.

But it really sets itself apart by its looks and its strong off-road spirit originating from:

* an increased ground clearance, raised by 16 mm at the front and 21 mm at the rear;
* original alloy wheels fitted with special 205/55R16 Bridgestone Turanza tyres;
* a new side profile creating an impression of strength and protection, consisting of wheel arch extensions connected at the front and rear, as well as laterally by 1.80 m «Narbonnais grey» coloured one-piece body sill mouldings, reminiscent of those found in the world of the 4x4, completing the protection at the front and rear.

State-of-the-art engines

Both the petrol and diesel engines are characterised in particular by their low fuel consumption and their protection of the environment with reduced "greenhouse" gas emissions. These qualities are particularly in tune with the «outdoor nature" and spirit of the 207 SW Outdoor.

Petrol engines

1.4 litre 16v VTi: 70 kW (~95 bhp) - 136 Nm at 4000 rpm - EP3

The newest member of the recent family of «EP» engines, this 1397 cm3 engine uses technology which is a true first in this segment and for this size of engine. It shares all of the technology found on the 1.6 VTi - its variable timing system for the inlet and exhaust camshafts and its variable inlet valve lift system - which allows the maximum valve lift to be adjusted gradually according to the position of the accelerator pedal.

1.6 litre 16v VTi: 88 kW (~120 bhp) - EP6

Using the same technology, the 1.6 litre 16v petrol engine (EP6) offers a power of 88 kW (120 bhp) and a torque of 160 Nm at 4250 rpm.

This engine is available with a five-speed manual gearbox or an automatic gearbox with «Porsche Tiptronic Sequential» control.

HDi diesel engines

Equipped with an aluminium cylinder block, a sixteen valve cylinder head and an intercooler, these engines benefit from a second generation high pressure common rail direct injection system (1600 bars) with injectors with six, very small diameter, injection holes to improve the injection spray pattern.

Two engine specifications are offered:

1.6 litre 16v HDi: 66 kW (~90 bhp) - DV6ATED4

This engine is characterised by a power of 66 kW (≈90 bhp) at 4000 rpm and develops a torque of 215 Nm at 1750 rpm

1.6 litre 16v HDi DPFS: 80 kW (~110 bhp) - DV6TED4 DPFS

This engine is distinguished by its power of 80 kW (110 bhp) and a torque of 240 Nm at 1750 rpm which can reach 260 Nm temporarily in the top three gears thanks to the «overboost» function. This version has a variable geometry turbocharger and an additive based diesel particulate filter system (DPFS).

Suspension and wheels - pseudo SUV

The exterior styling strengthens the "leisure" appeal and adds a hint of adventure due to the increased ride height of the vehicle, raised by 16 mm at the front and 21 mm at the rear, created by the use of new springs and larger tyres.

Even with this slight increase in the centre of gravity the 207 SW Outdoor still had to retain the important comfort/handling performance painstakingly developed for the 207 SW; this was achieved by focusing on three areas:

* the standard fitment of a 40,000 Nm/rad rear torsion beam (stiffness identical to that of the 207 SW HDi) which also performs the role of an anti-roll bar;
* the 6.5» wide wheels to maximising the performance of the new 205/55.16V Bridgestone Turanza tyre;
* the specific calibration of the electric power steering adapted to the new tyres.

Combined with the excellent structural performance of the 207, in terms of rigidity (0.9 mrad/100 daNm), the resulting comfort/handling performance ensures both safety and driving pleasure.

The 207 SW Outdoor benefits from a comprehensive primary safety specification consisting of as a minimum, ABS, electronic brake force distribution (EBFD) and emergency brake assistance (EBA). An ESP (electronic stability programme) system is offered as an option, the traction control and yaw control functions of which can be disconnected in order to improve traction in certain tricky conditions, reconnecting automatically above 30 mph (50 km/h).

Like the recent 207 SW, the Outdoor 1.6 litre HDi 80 kW (~110 bhp) version with ESP also includes a SSP function, first fitted on the sporty 207 RC.

This system permits dialogue between the ESP system and the electric power steering and makes it possible to maintain the stability of the vehicle when braking on surfaces offering different grip levels, while at the same time reducing the overall braking distance.

The reduction can be as much as 4 to 10% depending on the surface, which could be crucial in an emergency.

Highly developed secondary safety

The 207 SW Outdoor benefits from the protective structure of the 207 adapted to the SW body type. This is supplemented by six air bags (two adaptive front air bags, two side air bags and two curtain air bags), five inertia reel three-point seat belts with an audible / visual seat belt not fastened and unfastened warning system, three rear head restraints and two Isofix mountings with three location points.
