Peugeot 408 Rendered - In a Kizashi Sort Of Way...


Even though the current Peugeot 407 isn't due for replacement until 2010, French car magazine L'Auto Journal has come up with a new set of renderings of the mid-size model's successor that will almost certainly be called 408. We must admit that, rabbit-tooth grille aside, the 408 shown in these scans looks pretty sharp. And why shouldn't it as the artist apparently used the Suzuki Kizashi 3 sport sedan concept that made a splash at last April's New York Auto Show as a canvas for the 408...

But come to think of it, after seeing that the Peugeot Kizashi looks quite good on paper, we'd like to propose an idea: since Suzuki seems to have outright diluted the Kizashi's styling on the forthcoming production version (click here for details) how about if Peugeot took the original concept and applied a little bit of magic to create the 408?





Peugeot 407 SW 2009




2004 saw the debut of the Peugeot 407 Saloon and Peugeot 407 SW, launched to widespread acclaim for their bold, elegant styling and sporting dynamics, particularly for road holding efficiency. * 29,536 Coupés

In total, 77% are powered by HDi diesel engines, a figure which has risen to 86% after the first four months of 2008.

Asked why they chose the Peugeot 407, customersin the main European countries say firstly that they were attracted by the style, well ahead of the segment average (double in some countries), followed by comfort and the high levels of standard equipment.

The environmental qualities of the Peugeot 407 are, logically, cited in countries more sensitive to this key factor.

New equipment like front parking assistance enhances the car's world-wide reputation for ease of driving and dynamic performance.

It is available with a choice of four- and six-cylinder engines featuring the latest technology, particularly on the HDi Diesel versions, the most popular engine specified in the Peugeot 407.

These include an uprated 2.0-litre HDi engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox which develops a power of 103 kW (140bhp), an increase of 3kW (4bhp). It also benefits from a fuel consumption of 5.6 litres/100km (42.0mpg) and CO2 emissions reduced to 150g/km. This engine is approved in accordance with future Euro 5 regulation standards. This new specification testifies Peugeot's ongoing commitment to achieve the best possible environmental performance on the new Peugeot 407.

For example, after the standard fitment of an additive-enhanced diesel particulate filter system (FAP) on HDi Diesel powered 407s and following the introduction of the 1.6-litre HDi FAP engine (110bhp), particularly well suited as a fleet vehicle thanks to its low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions (only 140g/km for the Saloon and SW), a new 2.0-litre 'Bioflex' engine operates on E85 fuel and will be available for destinations where road tax incentives favour biofuels, with their environmental benefits.

To summarise, Peugeot has seized a great opportunity during the summer of 2008, to strengthen the appeal among motoring enthusiasts with the attractive new Peugeot 407 in the Saloon, SW and Coupé versions.

Upgrades to exterior style

At the front, the new Peugeot 407 Saloon and Peugeot 407 SW models benefit from a redesigned air intake. This important stylistic signature has been improved in terms of visual quality and elegance, but also has a stronger and more technically refined appearance.

Lateral black components adopt a new design that blends harmoniously with the lines of the transverse black beam. A new delicately curved grille rounds off the air intake assembly. It consists of a triple row of horizontal chrome bars crossed by a vertical chrome bar. Their cross section and inclination capture the light, adding presence to the grille and making mechanical assemblies more opaque without adversely affecting their cooling performance.

To protect the car from knocks and provide even more convenience to Peugeot 407 owners, front parking assistance system has been added to the rear parking assistance. As a result, the front bumper now discreetly incorporates the four sensors that gather information for the system.

The centrepiece of elegance and distinction of the entire range, the body protection mouldings are finished in body colour and accompanied with a chrome trim finisher.

The rear of the new Peugeot 407 Saloon draws inspiration from the natural sporting personality of the Coupé and its individual character.

The entirely redesigned new lower rear panel incorporates a protective capping decorated by a chrome bead. The lower part with its elaborate 'diffuser' adds to the car's dynamism, while the upper part of this new lower rear panel forms the basis of a redesigned boot sill.

This new shape of the lower rear panel accentuates the robust image of the rear of the Peugeot 407 Saloon while at the same time improving quality of style, due to the reduced clearances and the integration of four rear parking assist sensors in the bumper itself, making them particularly discreet.

The rear lights are entirely redesigned and add a new touch of originality by day and by night. With a ruby red housing and a crystal white finish on the reversing light and direction indicator, the daytime look appears noticeably different.

By night, the reflector function now moves from the lights to the 'diffuser' in the form of two small horizontal bars on either side of the registration plate.

The new volume of the lights, their transparent red reflector with chrome surround and peripheral textured finish, improve the quality appearance due to the high quality production procedure.

The rear of the new Peugeot 407 SW is also enhanced stylistically with a new lower rear panel and new lights.

The new rear volume is aligned harmoniously with the front of the SW. This enhances the effect of a monolithic sculpture and adds to the image of robustness and its high quality finish, which ensures flush-fitting components and minimal clearances, meticulous in every detail.

The new shape of the lower rear panel has a more pronounced curve, and gives a new visual identity to the rear design, which now incorporates edge protection mouldings enhanced with a chrome trim finisher, as well as recessed parking assistance sensors. In the lower section, its discreet diffuser effect adds a further touch of dynamism.

The new rear lights, in the upper section, exhibit a pronounced diode effect similar to that of the Peugeot 407 Coupé. The new reflector has a red lacquered finish giving the car a refined visual appeal by day. A collimator baffle with multiple prisms directs light to 'drop' zones where it is then diffused. In the lower light section, the reflector zone rotates elegantly.

External dimensions

Developments in style have resulted in a slight increase to the rear overhang, which sees the Saloon retain an overall length of less than 4.70m:

* Saloon: 4691mm (+15mm)
* SW: 4765mm (+2mm)

Other dimensions are unchanged and add to the aesthetic and dynamic balance of both versions.

The luxurious passenger compartment of the Peugeot 407 features new decorations and trim, creating an upmarket elegant atmosphere in a new execution that enhances perceived quality.

A spectacular 'lustrous pearlescent black' decoration similar to the finish on a high quality piano decorates the centre console, air vent trims, door handle inserts and door panel trims, creating a visual link between the door panels and the fascia panel. This enhances the ambience of the passenger compartment and is underlined by 'Square' metallic or 'Carmin burl' wood finishes on the Saloon and SW or an 'Alcane Grey' trim on the Peugeot 407 Coupé.

Entry level versions feature an 'iridescent (light affected) dark grey' decoration on the centre console and a 'silver satin' trim on the fascia panel and door panel mouldings.

Even more chrome

Accompanying these improvements are new rotary buttons and circular controls on the air conditioning, radio and telematics equipment have chrome surrounds, as do the control pads of the new satellite navigation system (see section entitled 'interior communication') and the CD player.

Just a few months after the launch of the new 308 hatchback into the medium car segment, Peugeot now presents the SW version.

The Peugeot 308 SW was first unveiled in the form of a concept car at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show. It builds further on the appeal of the 307 SW and estate versions, whose attractive and innovative packaging has won over the hearts of nearly 900,000 customers in the six years since they fi rst appeared on the market.

The 307 SW is a unique and original concept which combines a number of strengths such as driving enjoyment, onboard comfort and convenience, comprehensive equipment levels and good load carrying abilities. Since its launch it has been very well received by the car buying public. It has been especially successful with individuals who for practical reasons, found that a hatchback vehicle lacked a certain something and were uninspired by the design of M1 segment MPVs. A public who also required space and practicality for their leisure activities, interaction and user-friendliness, but above all wanted a vehicle with great visual appeal and driving enjoyment.

Like the 308 hatchback, the SW capitalises on all the strong points of the "T7" programme : The semi-tall architecture ensuring greater interior space, interior brightness and visibility, a strong stylistic identity, perceptible quality and meticulous attention to detail, all combined with road holding and safety of the highest order.

The Peugeot 308 SW also benefi ts from many of the features of the original SW concept car which guaranteed the success of its predecessor but, develops them even further.

For example, the panoramic glass roof is now 27 % larger (Total area of 1.68 m2), the modularity is easier to operate and improved and it now has a very practical large opening rear tailgate glass… All these new developments will help to meet even the most diverse requirements and lifestyle situations of its users.

Benefi ting from all of these features, the 308 SW does more than just maintain a level of driving enjoyment it extends it in many different ways.

The exterior design, of the Peugeot 308 SW succeeds in combining a particularly expressive and dynamic design at the front, which it shares with the 308 hatchback, with an original and curvaceous design at the rear.

The interior and the design of the fascia panel, identical to that of the hatchback create a sense of well-being entirely in keeping with the overall design of the passenger compartment. Its sloping design and fl owing lines, its elegant and impressive styling, reinforces the impression of space and on board comfort. A key feature of the concept vehicle and the interior ambience is the impressive panoramic glass roof, which on the Peugeot 308 SW now extends beyond the heads of the second row passengers, and can also be enjoyed by the occasional occupants of the third row seats. It increases the total glazed surface area of the vehicle to 5.58 m2.

The low interior noise levels are another feature which helps the comfort and convenience inside the car. It also considerably enhances the overall comfort levels of the passengers and their ability to talk easily between themselves.

Particular attention has been paid to the vehicle's modularity so that it can be adapted simply and effi ciently according to the requirements of its occupants.

For example, the rear seats in the second row are all individual, easy to remove, identical in size and, therefore, offering a multitude of combinations in the passenger compartment.

Also in the "7 seat" confi guration two occasional seats are fi tted in the third row. These seats, however, when required can be folded and with the second row seats folded as well, create a fl at fl oor which makes loading of bulky items much easier.

A practical load space which is a pleasure to use whatever the circumstances

Access to the load area via the wide tailgate or the opening rear tailgate glass is made much easier by the clever design of the rear load cover.

The particularly low load sill also makes it easy to load the vehicle which can accommodate up to 674 litres (equivalent volume of water) (or 573 dm3 according to the VDA standard) under the rear load cover with the second row seats in place. With the seats removed it provides a total volume of 2 149 litres up to the level of the roof (1 736 dm3 VDA).

In the load area, one of the load area lights is also a portable torch; an indication of the attention to detail that enhances further the car's practical features.

The load volume can also be increased further by folding forwards the back of the front passenger seat into the 'shelf' position, and then the Peugeot 308 SW can accommodate loads up to a length of 3.10 m.

All the driving enjoyment of a hatchback With regard to road holding, the wheels and suspension of the 308 hatchback have been revised to meet the special requirements of the SW version. Electro-hydraulic power steering provides the driver with good steering precision and feel. This precision is also assured by the design of the McPherson type front suspension and by the use of a torsion beam at the rear. In addition to the wider front and rear tracks, the fi tment of larger tyres (up to 18'') and a lower centre of gravity than the 307 SW, help to improve the overall dynamic performance. Benefi ting also from its excellent body rigidity, the Peugeot 308 SW provides the best possible combination of road holding and comfort and, therefore, is as much fun to drive as any hatchback.

The Peugeot 308 SW is available with a wide choice of modern, high performance, economical and environmentally-friendly power trains. Eleven are on offer in total, to meet the requirements of the widest possible customer base. Five petrol engines, from 70 to 128 kW (~ 95 to 175 bhp) including a "BioFlex" option and three HDi diesel engines, including two which are fitted as standard with a Diesel Particle Filter System (FAP). They are available with either a five speed manual gearbox, four speed automatic or an all new 6 speed manual gearbox.

The use of the latest technology in both the petrol and diesel engines, combined with the car's effi cient aerodynamics, weight saving measures and the use of new Michelin Energy Saver tyres, fi rst introduced on the 308 hatchback, give the Peugeot 308 SW an improved environmental effi ciency compared to that of its predecessor. Its fuel consumption, compared to similar engines, can be up to 10 % less than the 307 SW.

Optimal Safety

In addition to the primary safety guaranteed by its exemplary road holding, the Peugeot 308 SW offers a range of equipment such as the Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and directional bi-Xenon headlamps.

With regard to secondary safety, the structure (thanks in particular to the presence of three impact absorption structures) has been designed to provide optimal protection, combined with the ability to absorb the maximum amount of impact energy in a controlled manner. In addition, the SW can be equipped with up to 7 air bags, including a steering column air bag.

Tertiary safety is assured by the «Peugeot Emergency» service linked to the vehicle's RT4 telematics system, which can pinpoint the vehicle's location and trigger the dispatch of appropriate assistance as required.

A major innovation is the use of a "Wifi " seatbelt sensor system that assures the fasten seat belt warning function is even available on the removable second row seats, without any compromise on their modularity.

A simple range

The Peugeot 308 SW range, which will differ between individual countries, will consist of five trim levels between now and the summer of 2008. The entry level will, however, take the place of the "Estate" version of the 307 range. It will be fitted with a traditional steel roof and a folding rear bench seat, and will be aimed at customers mainly in search of an accessible vehicle with lots of space.

Finally, available in ten exterior colours, several different interior trims combined with either cloth or leather based interiors, the 308 SW range will have a version to appeal to the most demanding customers.


Peugeot 308 GT THP 175 2009




Peugeot will unveil two new 308 models at this year's Geneva Motor Show, the innovative and practical 308 SW and the dynamic 308 GT THP 175.

This new top of the range petrol model will be powered by the 1.6 litre turbo-charged THP 175 bhp petrol engine, previously found in the 207 GTi THP 175. It is also fitted with a new 6-speed manual gearbox.

To match the dynamic nature of the engine, the exterior of the vehicle benefits from a number of cosmetic changes. The lower front bumper panel has a unique appearance which is combined with a rear spoiler and a reduced overall ride height.

Inside, the interior gains an aluminium gear knob and foot pedals and a new steering wheel design.

Designed in co-operation with the BMW Group, the 1.6 litre turbo-charged petrol engine develops a maximum power of 175 bhp at 6000 rpm but is characterised mainly by its generous torque output. With a maximum torque output of 180 lb ft (or 195 lb ft with overboost) at only 1600 rpm, the engine provides excellent in-gear acceleration and levels of driveability normally associated with a larger capacity engine.

This new engine provides the 308 with higher performance levels while, at the same time, providing a combined fuel consumption of 37.1 mpg and CO2 emissions of 180 g/km, 10% less than those of the 307 2.0 litre Feline 180.

As the pioneer of "folding roof cars" with its elegant 401, 601 and 402 "Eclipse" models from the 1930s, Peugeot has never lost its desire to give motorists the freedom to drive in either the coupé or cabriolet configuration through the "magic" of a rigid roof that folds into the boot.

It's now almost a decade ago, at the Geneva Motor Show in 1998, that this innovative motoring concept was launched in the form of the 20-heart concept car.

This concept soon evolved into the Peugeot 206 CC and the Peugeot 307 CC, popularising a concept which was considered, until then, only for the elite. The heirs to these successful first generation vehicles have already taken to the road in the form of the Peugeot 207 CC and the soon-to-be launched Peugeot 308 CC.

By the end of May 2008, Peugeot had produced nearly 632,000 coupé-cabriolets for enthusiasts of this "lifestyle" motoring concept, making Peugeot the world leader in this body style:

Since the launch of the 307 CC in 2003, the structure of the lifestyle market has undergone a number of profound changes. Recently, cabriolets with a retractable rigid roof have become more popular than vehicles with a more vulnerable "soft top".

For the majority of customers, the 307 CC was the household's main car. It was chosen for the intelligence of its design and for its elegance but was also greatly appreciated in daily use for its comfort, specification and ride quality.

The Peugeot 308 has already taken the place of the Peugeot 307 in its hatchback and its SW versions, offering all the benefits of its successful forerunner while, at the same time, imposing its new identity, modern feel and strong personality.

An attractive design

The Peugeot 308 CC stands out by the superb fluidity of its style, both in its coupé and cabriolet configurations. From the badge to the end of the roof, from the door to the lower rear panel, the graphic style of its profile is emphasised by light reflecting contours. Chrome detailing further enhances this elegant profile.

Low slung and firmly planted on its wheels, the Peugeot 308 CC has a prominent shape and spectacular LED rear lights that use "red light curtain" technology to create a unique signature for the car by day and by night.

Two dynamic and flexible engines power the Peugeot 308 CC through a six speed manual gearbox. unless an automatic gearbox is preferred. They are the 1.6 litre THP 110 kW (150 bhp) turbocharged direct injection petrol engine and the 2.0 litre HDi FAP Euro 5 103 kW (140 bhp) diesel engine, the latter being also particularly environmentally-friendly.

The Peugeot RC HYmotion4 is an accessible and versatile car, with four doors, four seats and four wheel drive, coupled with a highly innovative electric/petrol hybrid architecture (HYmotion4 technology).

Its aim: a very high level of efficiency both in terms of performance (with its potential 230 kW/313 bhp) and minimal impact on the environment (CO2 emissions of 109 g/km in the combined cycle or Zero in electric mode). It is an exciting, eco-efficient vehicle which has all the characteristics that create a real passion for driving. A synthesis of ideas that demonstrates that respect for the environment and driving pleasure can be compatible.

The dawn of a new day... Over the distant horizon, the already powerful rays of the rising sun strike the façades of the buildings in their path. Among them, the expansive glazed façade of the Peugeot Design Centre which immediately embrace the new light of day. Daylight then fills the immense workshop where undetected activity has long been in progress. In fact, right here at this time, a small army of stylists are adding the final touches to their latest creation. As their eyes gradually adjust to the brightness, each stands back from their work, exposing the contours of the car's body to the rays of the sun. Centimetre by centimetre the sun's rays caress the car's carbon "skin", highlighting its pure and sensual contours. They illuminate the Lion badge at the front of the car, the strongly styled lines of the bonnet and the expressive design of the headlamps, bringing the shape to life. The latter also blend harmoniously together in an uninterrupted flow that emphasises the muscular design of the wheel arches, the raised window line and the two doors on either side of the vehicle.

A second team of engineers also share these intense and short moments. They are finishing the installation of the particularly innovative hybrid traction system into this automotive sculpture.

As, in the great tradition of Peugeot concept cars, this vehicle is an automobile first and foremost. It is a car which is fully in step with the times, but it is technologically ahead of its time. The 1.6 litre THP engine which is fitted at the rear of the vehicle is combined with a 70 kW electric motor under the bonnet. The end result is a maximum power of 230 kW (313 bhp), ensuring high levels of driving pleasure, combined with CO2 emissions in the combined cycle of only 109 g/km, or zero in electric only drive mode. Another major innovation made possible by the design is the vehicle's four-wheel drive system, which directly benefits road holding and therefore safety. Many other new features are available on the vehicle, for example the original design of the suspension and the on-board technology within the passenger compartment, again benefiting both driving comfort and the wellbeing of its four potential occupants.

Architecture/Engine

Externally, the vehicle's architecture places the driver's seat as far forward as possible, thereby benefiting style, driveability and available space for four potential passengers. The vehicle's carbon skin conceals a petrol engine, the 1.6 litre THP, which offers a maximum power of 160 kW (218 bhp), the same as in the Peugeot 308 RC Z concept car. This engine is located transversally in a central position at the rear of the vehicle, allowing sufficient interior space to seat four occupants while at the same time ensuring a large boot capacity. But in addition to this method of propulsion, the vehicle also has another mode of traction. Under the bonnet is a 70 kW (95 bhp) electric motor. This is powered by "lithium-ion" batteries and is recharged by an energy recovery system which operates during both deceleration and braking. The batteries are ideally positioned in the central "transmission" tunnel running through the passenger compartment. On the latter, the driver will also find the gear change control for the electronically-controlled six-speed manual gearbox. With no mechanical connections between the front and the rear power units, the system is controlled entirely and automatically by electronics using "by Wire" technology as used for the first time on the Hoggar, the concept car which appeared in 2003 and was equipped at the time with two HDi FAP diesel engines.


The Peugeot RC HYmotion4 can thus be driven in different ways:

* in electric only mode (to start up, in town at low speed and when decelerating),
* in petrol engine only mode, at constant speeds on the open road or on motorways, when the engine can achieve its optimal efficiency,
* with both engines combined:
o During phases of acceleration for extra power ("boost" function), making possible a maximum power of 160+70=230 kW (~ 313 bhp) and a maximum torque of 178 Nm at the front and 280 Nm at the rear, In four-wheel drive mode, when road conditions warrant it.
o In fact the layout of this electric/petrol hybrid system allows four wheel drive under all circumstances, benefiting safety and driveability.

This hybrid technology, as well as its special innovative layout, is an important vector of research and development within the PSA Peugeot Citroën group. On Peugeot's stand at the Paris Motor Show this innovative system called "HYmotion", is presented in a number of different formats, featuring different types of engines. The "HYmotion4" technology is represented here in its most extreme version.

Finally, an additional benefit provided by the vehicle's architecture is the optimal front and rear weight distribution, with minimal weight in both the front and rear overhangs.

Exterior style

The vehicle's innovative architecture is above all a plus for the style of the car. Indeed technological developments required for the car's dynamic and environmental efficiency, as well as the dimensions imposed by the presence of four seats in the passenger compartment, posed no constraints whatsoever on the flair of the stylists. On the contrary, the size inspires and immediately suggests an aerodynamic and finely sculpted vehicle. Every square millimetre of the bodywork has been carefully studied and modelled to give the concept a dynamic and appealing profile. This profile reinvents Peugeot's inherent codes while going still further in the search for overall balance and modern, flowing contours. The sense of motion begins at the very front of the vehicle, where the Lion badge is framed by air intakes that give indications of the car's excellent aerodynamic efficiency. This expressive character is enhanced by the headlamps, designed with Peugeot's stylistic genes in mind, but made even more attractive here by the use of LED technology. These headlamps are the starting point of a waist line which lends structure to the car's overall dynamic and flowing profile, supporting the plunging window line and highlighting the muscular design of the wings. These lateral contours then come together at the rear to draw out a shape suggestive of the powerful claws of a lion. The rear lights are contained within this area and also make a passing reference to the manufacturer's long history, the 504 coupé and cabriolet from 1969, the Peugeot 307 CC, and now the Peugeot 308 CC. From a higher perspective, we discover more original characteristics, such as the double glass roof, crossed by lines originating on the bonnet which merge into the Naca unit at the rear of the roof and end finally in an embossed area on the boot encircling the rear logo.

The interior

As for the bodywork, an original ambience reigns in the interior of the Peugeot RC HYmotion4. The passenger compartment succeeds in evoking the world of sport and ultra-modernity, thanks to the finish of particular details and its contrasting play of light and shadow. The high quality materials of the passenger compartment (leather, aluminium, chrome, carbon) and the four low-slung seats create an ambience that will delight the senses of smell and touch of motor car purists everywhere. The very "aeronautical" design of the fascia panel helps give the interior space a modern feel, with a finish consisting of two horizontal sections. Between the latter, numerous items of equipment are housed on a uniform black-lacquered background: digital displays in front of the driver (for instrumentation and visual feedback from the rear view cameras) and in front of the passenger (for leisure activities). In the centre there is a large touch screen controlling the audio functions of the Triangle® hi-fisystem, the satellite navigation, the air conditioning and the car's various settings.

Structure and suspension

Weight is a key factor in the dynamic and environmental efficiency of any vehicle. The Peugeot RC HYmotion4 has therefore been designed to optimise this parameter. Its structure thus comprises a "space-frame" type aluminium body ensuring overall lightness and rigidity, to which are fitted the mechanical assemblies and the suspension. Similarly, all bodywork components are manufactured from composite materials. The suspension, a field in which Peugeot has acknowledged expertise, consists of double aluminium wishbones at the front and at the rear. The system uses a particularly innovative technology known as "kineticTM H2 CES". This system, developed by the company TENNECO, allows a very high level of road holding with no adverse effect on comfort. The principle is to control body roll and damping functions by means of a hydraulic link between the right and left-hand shock absorbers. This system, which avoids the need for an anti-roll bar, ensures the car remains flat when cornering while at the same time providing excellent vibration filtration. Braking is by means of four ventilated brake discs, and in particular the front electric motor which recovers energy in order to recharge the batteries. The wheels are fitted with Michelin 225/45 R19 tyres.

Aerodynamics

The car's aerodynamic specification has been studied with particular care to attain a measured Cx value of 0.24 and an SCx of 0.494. Air flows have been modelled in the wind tunnel to optimise the car's performance and fuel consumption while ensuring the necessary cooling capacity for both engines. The four-part front air intake overcomes the problem of heat build up in relation to the lithium-ion batteries. It is also favourable to aerodynamic performance, with extraction of the internal flow taking place upstream of the front wheels. To optimise overall efficiency at all times, these air intakes are controlled by a system of movable flaps. Cooling of the petrol engine and its two intercoolers is by means of two side air intakes and the Naca unit located at the rear of the roof. Air is then extracted via two recesses in the lower rear panel. A system of carbon wheel "discs" improves the vehicle's penetration through the air by covering and streamlining each wheel, while at the same time preserving their very dynamic style. Lastly, the flat under floor and the rear diffuser help enhance overall efficiency.

This carefully designed aerodynamic specification also avoids the need for a spoiler, thereby enhancing the car's pure profile.

An environmentally-friendly car with passion

With its carefully designed aerodynamic specification and reduced weight, an electric motor at the front and a petrol engine offering excellent thermodynamic efficiency at the rear, the Peugeot RC HYmotion4 is designed to offer a new level of environmental efficiency in its category and is fully in step with the times (4.5 litres/100 km, CO2 emissions of 109 g/km in the combined cycle or Zero in electric mode). However this technology also makes it possible above all to maintain the motoring passion and the values of the Peugeot Marque in terms of both style and driveability. This creates a subtle contrast with the synthetic fur of an improbable animal covering the centre of the seat cushions.

The general ambience of light, bright grey, harmonises with the exterior colour, while turquoise visible stitching, echoing the displays and pictograms of the instrument panels, adds zest to this theme.

The overall effect is one of unity, both natural and clinical, animal and mechanical, physical and refined.

"Multiflex" interior: undreamt-of versatility

While giving the driver the promise of renewed driving pleasure, the Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 concept car also has much to offer its other occupants.

They too will enjoy the passenger compartment with its original atmosphere, bathed in generous volumes of light dispensed by the immense panoramic glass roof. They also benefit from numerous storage spaces, particularly in the rear floor and the generous front centre console.

Providing added security for the front passenger, a solid handle on the centre console, helps to find the ideal position for a comfortable journey.

Thanks to its intelligent "Multiflex" interior, the Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 can be converted to offer a very generous load carrying capacity. The lower tailgate flap, or "hobby", and the upper tailgate, open to reveal a boot in which the floor height can be adjusted very easily according to what needs to be carried.

From the boot, a special control can be activated to fold the second row seats instantly, as if by magic. Also benefiting from an ingenious folding front passenger seat, the Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 offers a perfectly flat floor from the lower tailgate flap "hobby" to the fascia panel. This makes available a huge interior space that is very easy to load.

Driving assistance: simple hi-tech equipment for enhanced safety and driving pleasure

Comfortably installed behind the wheel, the driver will discover equipment that makes passing reference to the world of aviation.

To ensure that the driver's eyes never have to leave the road, essential information is projected onto a retractable transparent display, similar to that of a fighter plane, which cleverly extends from the instrument panel binnacle. The settings for this Head-Up Display system can be adjusted by means of "Toggle Switches". These switches, placed at the top of the centre console, contribute stylistically to the interior ambience. They also control another original item of equipment: the "Distance Alert". As its name implies, this system helps the driver to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, according to speed.

Another item of equipment gives the driver peace of mind: Measurement of Available Space (MPD), which measures the size of the space during parking and indicates whether or not parking is possible. Similarly, the Electric Parking Brake (FSE) coupled with Hill Assist, facilitates manoeuvring and, takes the place of a manual hand brake, optimising the available space.

Finally, a new generation satellite navigation system helps to guide the driver along his chosen route. This "WIPCom 3D" combines all the benefits of existing satellite navigation systems proposed by the Marque (particularly the new "WIPCom" featured on the new 407). It also includes a Juke-box function, combined with a hard disc, the Peugeot Emergency system (which alerts the emergency services and pinpoints the vehicle's location in the event of an accident), a GSM function and a USB connector... while new functions are also in evidence, such as the DVD player, the Bluetooth® system and a graphic interface which shows city buildings in "full 3D".

In terms of "vehicle dynamics", the ESP featured on the Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 is coupled with a "Grip Control" system to ensure optimal traction. This "improved ASR" will deploy the car's 4 wheel drive to best effect when road conditions are less than perfect.

The HYmotion4: taking the hybrid concept to its limits

HYmotion4 technology, a magic formula that's elementary nonetheless: "Electric+HDi = 147 kW (200 bhp)+300 and 200Nm = 4 wheel drive+CO2 emissions of 109 g/km"

The Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 concept car incorporates an incredibly innovative power train: HYmotion4 technology.

This name represents the hybridisation of a traditional engine (a 2.0 litre HDi FAP with a power of 120 kW / 163 bhp) with an electric motor offering a maximum capacity of 27 kW (37 bhp). This unit is characterised by an original mechanical layout, since the HDi engine is situated in its usual place under the bonnet and drives the front wheels, while the electric motor, placed at the rear under the boot floor, drives the rear wheels .

Therefore, there are no mechanical components between the front and the rear, everything being controlled electronically ("by wire"), allowing optimisation of space in the passenger compartment.

The end result is a 4-wheel drive vehicle offering reduced fuel consumption in the combined cycle of 4.1 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions of 109 g/km!

None of which detracts from the car's performance, since with a maximum power of 147 kW (200 bhp) and a maximum torque of 300 Nm at the front and 200 Nm at the rear, acceleration and in-gear acceleration are at the level of what could be obtained with a single 2.2 litre HDi FAP dual-turbo engine.

Here too, the hybridisation of technologies makes it possible to combine the benefits of a roomy car with 4-wheel drive, while at the same time offering environmentally-friendly credentials.

HDi FAP hybrid: research goes on

To tackle the problem of greenhouse gas emissions, and with the prospect of fuel prices rising ever higher, the Peugeot Marque has made the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions a key facet of its product policy.

Already today, Peugeot is making a real contribution to the PSA Peugeot Citroën group's position as a world leader on the market of vehicles emitting less than 120 g/km of CO2.

To retain its leadership, the group has announced that it is working on a range of different technologies, including:

* Large-scale "micro-hybridisation" with a STOP & START system, which will equip more than a million of the group's vehicles by 2011.
* HDi hybrid technology, which combines an HDi diesel engine with a particulate emission filter (FAP), with STOP & START and also with an electric motor operating in parallel to the diesel engine. This technology breaks with the past and allows gains in fuel consumption and emissions in the order of 35 % compared to a traditional diesel engine which is already highly efficient in thermodynamic terms (fuel consumption is reduced by 30 % compared to a petrol engine of the same capacity).

Several technological demonstrators have enabled the group to develop and increase its experience in this diesel hybrid technology.

These demonstrators have capitalised on the group's historic advance in the field of electric cars and, naturally, on its widely acclaimed expertise in the field of diesel engines featuring HDi FAP technology. The HDi hybrid therefore combines the exceptional efficiency of a HDi FAP diesel engine, here used in its optimum operating phase, with the addition of an electric motor particularly well suited to urban driving.

* January 2006 saw the unveiling of a 307 Hybrid HDi equipped with a 1.6 litre HDi FAP 66 kW (~ 90 bhp) engine and an electric motor offering a maximum power of 23 kW (31 bhp). Its fuel consumption in the combined cycle was 3.4 litres/100 km equating to CO2 emissions of 90 g/km for a level of performance equivalent to that of a 1.6 litre HDi 80 kW (~ 110 bhp) engine,
* In March 2006, with a view to offering cars that are both attractive and environmentally-friendly and taking the notion of driving freedom to a new level, a Peugeot 307 CC Hybrid HDi was presented. This car features a 1.6 litre HDi FAP 80 kW (~ 110 bhp) engine and an electric motor providing a maximum power of 31 kW (42 bhp), giving the vehicle a fuel consumption in the combined cycle of 4.1 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions of 109 g/km, with a level of performance equivalent to that of the 2.0 litre HDi FAP 100 kW (~ 136 bhp) engine,
* In September 2007, a new step was taken in terms of system performance and the optimisation of components with a view to possible industrialisation. The 308 Hybrid HDi 1.6 litre HDi FAP 80 kW (~ 110 bhp) engine and its electric motor delivering a maximum power of 23 kW (31 bhp) offered a combined cycle fuel consumption of 3.4 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions of 90g/km.

The Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 concept car constitutes a new and decisive step towards the marketing of this innovation.

This car's technology represents a major advance in terms of customer benefits.

Firstly it benefits from experience acquired from previous technological demonstrators, keeping the same high level of environmental efficiency (a 35 % improvement compared to that obtained with a 2.2 litre HDi FAP dual-turbo engine).

Secondly, it offers a level of performance of the highest order thanks to its potential power of 147 kW. Finally, its innovative design allows the possibility of 4 wheel drive, benefiting safety and driveability, with no adverse effect on the design of the engine compartment or the interior passenger space.

Peugeot HYmotion3 Compressor Concept 2008




Occupying a half-way house between the world of the scooter and the car, the Peugeot HYmotion3 compressor is a highly original proposal designed to facilitate urban mobility. Attractive thanks to its dynamic, streamlined and futuristic style ; it is an interesting concept combining numerous benefits (size, safety and comfort) with "HYmotion" hybrid/petrol technology. This new generation technology creates a three wheel drive vehicle, benefiting safety and driveability and combining economy with an environmentally-friendly specification (CO2 emissions of only 47 g/kph in the combined cycle, zero in electric only mode).

The Peugeot HYmotion3 compressor concept is a means of transport with no affiliation to a particular type of vehicle. With its three wheels and its streamlined body, it is something of a missing link between two worlds which to date are quite distinct: that of the scooter and that of the car. With an electric motor in each of its two front wheels, coupled at the rear with a petrol engine, it brings into play very innovative hybrid technologies allowing each of its wheels to provide motive power.

In a world of intensifying urban traffic where everyone is trying to save time, where oil prices are skyrocketing and the environment is more than ever a priority, design departments are vying in ingenuity to develop solutions for the future.

Giving full rein to their creativity and expertise, two separate Peugeot teams converged on a similar idea and finally worked in tandem to develop a particularly original project: the Peugeot HYmotion3 compressor.

This "concept car", or rather "concept scooter", is based on the extensive experience of Peugeot Motorcycles, specialists in the scooter field, as well as the creativity and innovative capabilities of stylists and engineers working for Automobiles Peugeot. To create this concept, Peugeot was able to draw on its extensive experience in the world of transportation enabling each individual, according to their age or their needs, to choose from among the Marque's cycles, motorcycles and cars.

This vehicle offers an ideal mix of the benefits of a scooter and particular characteristics of a car.

Its design is based on three wheels for maximum stability, safety and driveability. Its width of 82 cm enables it to thread a path through urban traffic with all the efficiency of a two-wheeler. The front windscreen extends to the rear of the vehicle to form a highly effective shield against bad weather for the rider and passenger. In addition, regulations in France allow the vehicle to be driven with a B licence only, giving it a wide range of potential customers.

Finally, this vehicle incorporates HYmotion technology, also featured on other concept-cars in the Peugeot exhibition space at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. This new generation hybrid technology incorporates the supercharged petrol engine already featured in the Peugeot Satelis scooter. With a power of 15 kW (20 bhp) driving the rear wheel, it is combined with two electric motors, each with an output of 3 kW, located in the front wheels.

This configuration develops a maximum power of 21 kW (29 bhp) for a particularly low fuel consumption of 2.0 litres/100 kph and CO2 emissions of 47 g/kph in the combined cycle, or 0 in electric only mode. The design of the Peugeot HYmotion3 compressor, with its three wheel drive, provides positive benefits for both safety and driveability.

Thanks to its extreme hybridisation, the Peugeot HYmotion3 compressor concept creates a new benchmark in terms of safety (improved traction and braking), practicality and environmental-friendliness, offering original versatility at one with its environment.

Style

On the basis of a frame designed by Peugeot Motorcycles, Peugeot car stylists unveiled a resolutely sporty and avant-garde design which also captures the spirit of their latest creations, for example the Peugeot 308 RC Z concept car.

Two polished aluminium roll-over bars support the "bubble" which protects the two occupants. This use of materials is strongly reminiscent of the RCZ concept.

These bars make a significant contribution to the vehicle's overall personality and balanced proportions. In addition to the comfort provided by this structure, the bars end in a handle which can be used by the rear passenger. To preserve the vehicle's clean lines, there are no rear-view mirrors, this function being carried out by two display screens on the instrument panel offering optimal rear vision.

Viewed from the front the vehicle creates a strong impression of modernity with its row of light emitting diodes (LEDs) on either side of the base of the front windscreen. These provide highly efficient lighting and also ensure that the vehicle can be seen easily in traffic.

Tapered front mudguards, strong lines and hi-tech rear lights... each detail adds to the dynamism of the Peugeot HYmotion3 compressor. A dynamism which bears a strong resemblance to models in the Peugeot car range...

Operating principle: simple, efficient, automatic and transparent for the user

The vehicle's petrol engine has a power output of 15 kW (20 bhp). It is the supercharged 125 cc engine featured in the Peugeot Satelis scooter, this modern engine is widely acclaimed for its performance in its market segment.

In addition to this method of propulsion, the vehicle also has another mode of traction.

Two electric motors, one in each wheel, are present at the front of the vehicle. With a power of 2 x 3 kW, they are powered by "lithium-ion" batteries and recharged by an energy recovery system which operates during deceleration and braking.


Therefore, there are no mechanical connections between the front and the rear, everything being controlled electronically ("by wire"), allowing optimisation of the available space.

The Peugeot HYmotion3 compressor can therefore be ridden in a number of different ways:

* in electric only mode (when starting up, at low speed and when decelerating, for a range of up to 10 kph at stabilised speed),
* in petrol engine only mode, at a constant speed on the open road, when the engine attains its optimal efficiency,
* with the petrol engine / electric motors combined:
o during phases of acceleration for additional power ("boost" function), the latter can attain a maximum of 15 + 3 x 2 = 21 kW (29 bhp),
o in three wheel drive mode, when road conditions warrant it.

In fact, the layout of this electric/petrol hybrid system allows three wheel drive under all circumstances, benefiting safety and driveability.

This hybrid technology, as well as its special innovative layout, is an important vector of research and development for Peugeot. Known internally as "HYmotion", this system is presented in multiple formats, featuring different types of engine, on Peugeot's stand at the Paris Motor Show. This concept demonstrates that the technology can be installed in any type of vehicle. In addition, different types of conventional engine can be combined with different types of electric motor.

HYmotion technology in this case is particularly miniaturised to ensure an environmental performance of the highest order.

The suspension and the structure are designed to take account of this technology's application. The parallelogram type front suspension (i.e. with tilting wheels) has a transverse damper at its centre and ensures optimal driveability and vehicle stability. These technical components are located on the wheel hubs, therefore reducing the vehicle's centre of gravity following the example of the low-slung tubular frame.

Braking, rendered more efficient by the presence of an ABS system, it relies on three ventilated discs and, above all, the front electric motors, which recover energy to recharge the batteries. This assembly (three wheels + electric motor braking) also reduces the braking distance by around 30% compared to a two-wheel scooter equipped with traditional brakes.

Another system contributing to the vehicle's efficiency is the STOP & START system. This system switches the petrol engine to standby mode during stop phases (at a red traffic light or a stop sign, in queuing traffic, etc.) or when the vehicle is being driven in electric only mode. This allows significant gains in terms of fuel consumption and emissions, particularly in dense traffic conditions. It also allows the petrol engine to be restarted instantaneously and "transparently" for the driver when necessary. Note that when being driven in electric only mode, the HY motion 3 compressor is ideally suited to city use since it generates no CO2 emissions or pollutants and is silent in operation.

The end result is a three-wheel drive vehicle offering reduced fuel consumption in the combined cycle of 2.0 litres/100 kph and CO2 emissions of 47 g/kph!

Performance doesn't suffer either, since with a maximum power of 21 kW (29 bhp), its acceleration and in-gear acceleration is equivalent to what would have been possible with a single cylinder 400 cc engine.

Here too, the hybridisation of technologies makes it possible to combine the benefits of an ultra-compact urban vehicle with three-wheel drive, while at the same time offering environmentally-friendly credentials.

Environmentally-friendly and efficient technologies: research goes on

In fact Peugeot is making a key contribution to the position of the PSA Peugeot Citroën group as a world leader in the market of cars with a rate of CO2 emissions below 120 g/kph.

In the market for motorised two-wheelers, Peugeot Motorcycles is also very much to the fore. Peugeot Motorcycles has been innovating since 1996 when it launched the Scoot'Elec, the market's first compact electric scooter.

In 2002, Peugeot Motorcycles developed and perfected engines with electronic fuel injection in line with the strictest anti-pollution standards, thereby helping to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while improving performance and driveability.

In 2006, weight and aerodynamic tests carried out in the wind tunnel saw the Satelis scooter obtain the best SCx on the market and, as a result, offer one of the lowest fuel consumptions in its segment.

Since 2008, Peugeot Motorcycles has included a 50 cc, 4-stroke scooter in its range offering particularly low fuel consumption, the V-Clic.

With HYmotion technology, benefiting from experience derived from previous technological demonstrators (Peugeot 307, 307 CC and 308 Hybrid HDi), the Peugeot HYmotion3 compressor represents a major advance in terms of "customer" benefits.
