2010 Volkswagen NMS: VW's North American Market Sedan Spied

Brenda Priddy and her associates managed to scoop a prototype model of Volkswagen's forthcoming North American market mid-size sedan as it was being transferred into a company truck. As you can see from the pictures that were published by 'LeftlaneNews', the test mule's front end displays a mixture of styling elements from both the Jetta and the latest Golf. Codenamed NMS which stands for "New Midsize Sedan", the vehicle will be built at the German company's first U.S. production facility in more than 20 years, located in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The "NMS" is supposed to be roughly the same size as the current VW Passat but with a much lower price tag. According to an earlier announcement made by VW officials during a presentation in Berlin, Germany this past October, the "NMS" will come equipped with the firm's latest Fuel-Stratified Injection (FSI) gasoline and TDI diesel engine units, mated to a dual-clutch transmission.

And since the mid-size sedan will be designed to cater the specific needs of U.S. consumers, VW says that it will feature "spacious legroom", a "large trunk volume" and a large number of well-sized cupholders (...).

O.CT. Tuning: New 193HP 1.4 TSI Performance Kit for VW Golf, Touran and Tiguan



Austrian tuner O.CT Tuning has completed development on a new performance kit for the VW Group's 1.4-liter TSI engine that combines direct injection with a supercharger and turbocharger and is currently available with outputs of 140, 150, 160 and 170HP. In every case O.CT's kit that includes a modded ECU raises power to 193HP and toque to 285 Nm (+65 Nm).

O.CT CW Tiguan SUV The folks over at O.CT. supportcthat with this kit, the Golf 1.4 TSI accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62mph) in 8.0 sec or 1.2 seconds faster that the 140HP factory model and to 160 km/h (100 mph) in 18.5 sec instead of 24.5 sec. The O.CT Golf's top speed is also improved from 205 km/h (127mph) to 225 km/h (140mph).

With the same kit, the VW Tiguan 1.4 TSI 4Motion allegedly sprints to 100 km/h a full second faster and reaches 180 km/h (112mph) a whopping 10 seconds sooner than the standard vehicle.

Volkswagen Touareg North Sails (2009)







At the 2008 Paris Motor Show, Volkswagen is presenting a special model of the Touareg whose design was customized for yachting enthusiasts: the Volkswagen Touareg North Sails. The special edition designed in cooperation with renowned sailing outfitter North Sails impresses with numerous exterior and interior elements that reflect the style of high-end yachts. The new special model is already being launched this fall of 2008 and will be available with all six, eight and ten cylinder engines (176 kW / 240 PS to 257 kW / 350 PS).


Interior design: high-end and nautical in style


The most remarkable features of the new Volkswagen Touareg North Sails are to be found in the passenger compartment. Stylistically, the interior is a rather perfect match to the standard exterior car color "Campanella white" or the optional "Shadow blue metallic". In addition, the following car colors also provide a harmonious match: "Arctic blue silver metallic", "Atacama gray metallic", Galapagos anthracite metallic", "Reflex silver metallic" and "Black magic pearl effect". Basic interior features include "Cricket" leather upholstery in "Anthracite" or "Latte Macchiato" color. When the customer chooses the optional comfort seats (standard starting with the V8 FSI), they may also be ordered in Nappa leather with the special "St. Tropez" pattern and its white hue.


In conjunction with the "Latte Macchiato" and "St. Tropez" color schemes, the seats and interior door trim also sport seams in Aquamarine blue. Providing an exciting contrast are the "Aluminium engine spin, dark" decorative inserts of the instrument panel, door trim panels and center console. As an alternative, the Volkswagen Touareg North Sails may also be ordered with "Piano paint, white" treatments in these areas, which also evokes the elegance of luxury yachts. Standard features on board include stainless steel door tread plates (with "North Sails" signature in front) and the "North Sails" logo embossed on the center panels of the front seats.


Body design: luxurious chrome accents dominate


The design of the Volkswagen Touareg North Sails fits in ideally at any marina. For one, this is attributable to the already mentioned car paint in nautical "Campanella white" and the 19-inch "Zaragoza" alloy wheels with their chrome accents (with size 275/45 tires). For another, the special model is also pleasing with the factory-installed "Chrome & Style" design package. Two oval tailpipes of the exhaust system, a roof railing in silver, bi-xenon headlights including dynamic curve lighting, a vent glass sunroof and 65 percent light absorbing tinted windows in the rear (from the B-pillars) round out the equipment package. "North Sails" decals on the B-pillars complete the modifications.


Perfect at the pier and on the way there


The Volkswagen Touareg is the first choice for every skipper, not only at marinas, but as a towing vehicle for a boat trailer. The reason: all versions of the successful luxury SUV can tow braked trailers weighting up to 3.5 metric tonnes. The allowable hitch load is up to 140 kilograms. A removable trailer hitch is therefore part of the standard equipment package.

Volkswagen Scirocco (2009)







The countdown is running for the new era Scirocco: the third generation of the sports car will already be arriving on the market in August. Volkswagen is staging the comeback of a legend with the debut of the two-door car - Volkswagen Scirocco generations I and II wrote history as the most successful Volkswagen coupé of all time with about 800,000 units sold.


Cult status. In particular, it is the original Volkswagen Scirocco presented in 1974 that has long held cult status. Because, in contrast to many of its competitors of that time, the Volkswagen Scirocco - designed by Giorgio Giugiaro - was an affordable car with everyday utility, and front-wheel drive also made it a safe sports car for use every day of the year.


Volkswagen Scirocco unites passion and logic


Fascination. The new Volkswagen Scirocco is extending this tradition. It offers pure driving pleasure, a new powerful design, high-end technologies such as DCC adaptive chassis control and the new 7-speed DSG dual clutch transmission. Plus: exclusive use of efficient turbo engines with up to 147 kW / 200 PS power, space for four adults despite its sporty lines, an extremely high level of safety and the everyday utility that is typical of every Volkswagen. This mix of passion and logic costs far less than one might guess based on the car's key data.


New paths. Although the third generation of the Volkswagen Scirocco follows exactly the same positioning as the first one, Volkswagen very intentionally avoided retro elements. In this regard too, the Volkswagen Scirocco of the year 2008 is a conceptually counterpart to the original version: because in the mid-1970s the successor to the Karmann Ghia also set out on new paths, both technically and visually.


Front end design of a new era


High-sheen black headlamp housing. The third Scirocco is the first Volkswagen to sport the front end design of a new era. Especially characteristic here are the chrome lamp bodies and high-sheen black interior surfaces of the headlamp housings that are joined by the radiator grille cross bar that is also painted in high-sheen black.


Flawless sports car fundamentals. The Volkswagen design team created a wagon-coupé based on flawless sports car fundamentals. This resulted in a side profile that had the potential to imbue this new Volkswagen too with a status that goes beyond class distinctions. Thanks to its long sweeping roofline and near-vertical rear window, it also frees up space for variability and up to 755 liters of cargo capacity.


Crisp dimensions. Other benchmark figures of the new sports car also speak a clear language. With its short overhangs, the Volkswagen Scirocco efficiently utilizes its 2,578 millimeter wheelbase to offer ample space. The Volkswagen is 1,404 millimeters tall, exactly 4,256 millimeters long and its width measures 1,810 millimeters.


Four turbo engines at market introduction


A lot of power for just a little fuel. One challenge in creating an affordable sports car involves the engines. On the one hand, they must absolutely be agile, yet it is also essential that they be economical and widely affordable. There are two approaches to resolving this apparent conflict Both of them have three letters: TDI and TSI - turbocharged diesel and gasoline direct injection engines.


One TDI and three TSIs. At the market introduction Volkswagen will offer the Volkswagen Scirocco with two TSI engines (118 kW / 160 PS and 147 kW / 200 PS). Shortly thereafter, a TDI (common rail turbo-diesel, 103 kW / 140 PS) and another TSI (90 kW / 122 PS) will be added to the engine lineup. Decisive here is the fact that even the 122-PS base engine offers a maximum of torque at extremely low engine speeds (200 Newton-meter starting at 1,500 rpm). Its average fuel consumption of 6.1 liters per 100 kilometers shows considerable restraint.


5.4 to 7.7 liters fuel consumption. The combination of maximum torque and minimum consumption is a common theme running through the entire engine lineup. In the case of the latest TSI with 160 PS, 240 Newton-meter torque contrasts with just 6.5 liters super unleaded per 100 kilometers. And even on the 200-PS TSI with its considerable 280 Newton-meter of torque, fuel consumption is just 7.7 liters. As would be expected, the TDI also makes a brilliant showing here: 320 Newton-meter of powerful torque while being satisfied with just 5.4 liters of fuel. Incidentally, all engines up to 160 PS already satisfy the future Euro-5 emissions standard.


Two crisply shifting dual clutch transmissions


6-speed and 7-speed DSG. Standard equipment on the Volkswagen Scirocco is the smoothly and precisely shifting 6-speed transmission. The DSG dual clutch transmission is offered as an option on the three engines starting at 140 PS. A 6-speed DSG is used with the TDI and the powerful 200 PS TSI. The 160-PS TSI distributes its power over an even broader range of gears with the 7-speed DSG.


Optional sport chassis with three level settings


Clever Chassis. Ideally tailored to the Volkswagen Scirocco is the new DCC adaptive chassis control system. Not only is the damper characteristic controlled here, but also tuning of the electro-mechanical power steering. Adaptive chassis control offers the three programs "Normal", "Sport" and "Comfort". Significant here is the fact that adaptive chassis control improves the driving characteristics of the Volkswagen Scirocco full-time. That is, the suspension is continually adapted to the roadway and driving situation. The system also reacts to accelerator, brake and steering inputs. It is able to resolve the conflict in goals between a tight sport suspension and a comfortable one.


Standard features


Full program. The new VW Scirocco is one of the most attractive sports cars in terms of price. And yet its standard features place it on the same level as far more expensive coupés. Always on board are 17-inch alloy wheels, height-adjustable driver and front passenger seats, leather steering wheel, parking brake handle and shifting lever grip, sport seats, split folding rear seatbacks, power windows, air conditioning, ESP, braking assistant, six airbags, power steering and of course a sport chassis. On the top 200 PS model, standard equipment also includes chrome tailpipes, a "Titanium black" roof liner and a sound generator.


Panorama vent sunroof


Transparent roof. Supplying vast amounts of light to the interior is an optional large panorama vent sunroof that extends from the A-pillars to the B-pillars. At the press of the button the transparent roof opens up to 39 millimeters. When the sun is intense, a sunshade can be driven into place. But that is not likely to be necessary very often, since the glass of the panorama vent sunroof only transmits 8.2 percent of the UV radiation, 2.8 percent of the infrared radiation (heat) and 6.9 percent of the visible light.

Volkswagen Routan (2009)






Volkswagen of America unveiled the Routan, an all new seven-passenger minivan. It delivers the best of both worlds: a vehicle that combines European sensibilities in design, fit and finish, and handling characteristics with market relevant features and outstanding value.


The Volkswagen Routan is instantly recognizable as a member of the Volkswagen family, with its stylized front grille and exterior treatments. The interior enhancements create an environment that is visually pleasing, modern, and meticulously detailed. The high quality materials, beautiful textures and rich luxurious colors are combined with exacting tolerances and superb fit and finish. While pleasing and contemporary, the interior also follows the traditional Volkswagen design philosophy that form follows function.


Second row captain's chairs offer an increased level of luxury and comfort while still providing the convenience of a traditional minivan, with over 32.7 cubic feet available behind the third row seats and a full 83 cubic feet is available behind the second row.


The Volkswagen Routan will come standard with a 3.8L V6, offering 197 hp and 230 lb. ft. of torque when combined with the standard six-speed automatic transmission. A 4.0L V6 will be available rated at 253 hp and 263 lb. ft. of torque. VW Routan features European tuned suspension and steering optimized for handling and improved driving dynamics. Standard all-season traction control and ESP, brings safety and security to the Routan. The Routan comes with a host of unique features, including:

  • Conversation Mirror
  • Rear seat entertainment system with two 9 inch screens for second and third row, wireless headsets, and remote control
  • Dual power sliding doors with power windows
  • Touch screen navigation with twenty meg hard drive
  • Power lift gate with flood lamp
  • Thirteen cup holders


Volkswagen delivers a competitively priced entry into this high volume segment with prices starting below $25,000. The Volkswagen Routan was developed together with Chrysler LLC and will be built in an already existing facility in Windsor, Ontario.

Volkswagen Phaeton 2009






A new infotainment system (RCS 810 and RNS 810) as well as an efficient V6 gasoline direct injection engine, now with 206 kW / 280 PS, characterize the Volkswagen Phaeton of model year 2009 that has been perfected in numerous details. For example, all engines satisfy the Euro-5 emissions standard in the new model year. Other modifications include: three new types of alloy wheels (17, 18 and 19 inch), a slightly modified radiator grille, three new car colors ("Silver leaf metallic", "Beryllium grey metallic" and "Mocca-anthracite pearl effect"), the new leather color "Corn Silk", the new wood accents "Poplar grain latte macchiato" and "Vavona", switch illumination that is now white throughout instead of red, accent and switch trim in new "Warm grey" color, an upgraded car key, makeup mirror in the rear of the long version, dampers optimized for low-friction, ceramic brakes (front) for the Volkswagen Phaeton W12 as well as a rearview camera (Rear Assist). The new version of the high-tech sedan is being shown for the first time in the world at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. First deliveries of models are already slated for 2008.


Control of climate control system and infotainment redesigned


The most in-depth revision on the Volkswagen Phaeton is a completely new center console design. A key component here: the new, standard RCD 810 infotainment system (radio variant) or the also new RNS 810 (optional navigation system variant).


To integrate the Volkswagen Phaeton's new infotainment systems in a style that is as balanced as the prior model's solution, the center console was fully redesigned. This also involved changing controls for the four-zone automatic climate control (Climatronic): the tempe­rature is now set by rotary dial and is continuously displayed digitally above the control panel. The keys controlling individual ventilation functions were also redesigned. The intuitive control panel for climate control continues to be located beneath the infotainment system.


Newly developed: RCD 810 and RNS 810


The RCD 810 and RNS 810 infotainment systems with high-resolution 8-inch touchscreen in 16:9 format were redeveloped for the Volkswagen Phaeton. Take the example of the RNS 810: it unites numerous multimedia functions such as an auxiliary TV hybrid tuner (option) and the "Premium" prep for Bluetooth mobile telephone with a very quickly responding navigation system, which accesses an integrated 30-Gigabyte hard drive. Furthermore, it is simple and easy to modify general vehicle settings via the touchscreen monitor. The higher-level menus are selected by eight additional keys to the left and right of the touchscreen. The signal of the optional rearview camera is also transmitted to the screen.


The integrated DVD drive can read out all commonly used audio formats and - when the vehicle is stationary - video films can also be played back over the monitor in brilliant image quality. There is also a slot for SD memory cards on the front of the unit. External MP3 players and similar data media can be interfaced via the MEDIA-IN (MDI) media socket. A Dynaudio system with an acoustic power of 1,000 Watt provides for exceptionally good sound.


As mentioned, the new RNS 810 unit's range of use has been extended with a TV hybrid tuner. It enables reception of both analog and digital broadcasting stations (DVB-T). Its digital reception has an especially high image quality. In addition, the latest news can be called up via the integrated video text feature. TV reception is available as a special option on the RNS 810.


In combination with the optional "Premium" prep for a Bluetooth mobile telephone, the RNS 810 also makes telephoning easier. It is operated conveniently by pressing the "Phone" key on the left side of the 8-inch display. Further control, such as scrolling through the phone number memory or speed dialing can be performed via the 10-key numeric keypad shown on the screen. As an alternative, the telephone may be operated with ease from the multifunctional steering wheel, by voice control or an auxiliary mobile unit.


New V6 FSI, full conformance to Euro-5 standard


A new V6 gasoline engine being used in the Volkswagen Phaeton is an FSI engine (direct gasoline injection); it has 3.6 liter displacement and 206 kW / 280 PS. This engine is replacing the 3.2 liter V6 with 177 kW / 241 PS. The comfortable FSI develops a maximum torque of 360 Newton-meter, which is constantly available between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm and guarantees impressive high-torque performance. The maximum power of the twenty-four valve six cylinder is output at 6,250 rpm.


Powered in this way, the luxury sedan - with its standard 6-speed automatic, 4Motion all-wheel drive and electronically controlled air suspension - exhibits agile driving performance. The Volkswagen Phaeton V6 FSI reaches the 100 km/h mark from a stop in 8.6 seconds, and its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Its average fuel consumption is 11.7 liter Super. CO2 emissions were reduced from 288 g/km to 273 g/km.


Besides the new 3.6 liter FSI, the two other more powerful V8 and W12 gasoline engines with 246 kW / 335 PS and 331 kW / 450 PS, respectively, already satisfy the Euro-5 emissions standard that takes effect in September 2009. It was one of the first engines in the world to conform to this standard at the beginning of 2007, due to its extremely fuel-efficient V6 TDI with 3.0 liters displacement and common rail direct injection (171 kW / 233 PS).

Volkswagen Passat CC (2009)






With more than 15 million cars built, the Passat and Passat Variant rank among the really big successes in automotive history. Now Volkswagen is extending the model range of this car line by adding a third dimension: the Passat CC. Its fully independent body design, an interior that has sporty individual bucket seats in the rear too, impressive powertrain systems and technological highlights worthy of the luxury class, meld together to create a unique vehicle in the Passat's market segment. The Passat CC is an elegant sedan and a dynamic coupé simultaneously. The concept and design of this Volkswagen are defining fresh, new directions beyond the mainstream.


Direct-injection gasoline and diesel engines with 140 PS, 160 PS and 300 PS


At its launch in Europe, the 4.8 meter long Volkswagen will be offered with two direct-injection gasoline engines (TSI and V6) as well as a turbo-diesel (TDI). The gasoline engines output 118 kW / 160 PS and 220 kW / 300 PS; the turbo-diesel develops 103 kW / 140 PS and already satisfies the Euro-5 emissions standard that takes effect in Fall 2009. At this power level, the Passat CC TDI consumes just 5.8 liters diesel and is 213 km/h fast. Among the most economical gasoline engines of its class, with average fuel consumption of 7.6 liters per 100 kilometers is the 222 km/h fast Passat CC TSI. The Passat CC V6 4Motion is electronically limited to 250 km/h; its average fuel consumption is 10.1 liters. Standard equipment on the top V6 model: the new generation of 4Motion full-time all-wheel drive, as well as the new adaptive chassis control system and very efficient DSG dual-clutch transmission.


Premiere at Volkswagen: "Lane Assist" and "DCC adaptive chassis control"


Just as innovative as the powertrain technologies are the driver assistance systems of the Passat CC. Also being introduced for the first time on a Volkswagen are the "Lane Assist" lane-keeping system and new "DCC adaptive chassis control". Other high-end technologies include the "Park Assist" parking assistant and "ACC automa­tic distance control" with "Front Assist" for braking distance reduction.


Panorama vent sunroof extends from A-pillars to B-pillars


Furthermore, the Passat CC is putting on a whole display of fascinating fireworks with other innovative and detailed solutions. Newly developed, for example, is an electrically actuated Panorama vent sunroof. The transparent roof is 750 millimeters long and 1,120 millimeters wide. This means that it covers the entire front section up to the B pillars. In this case, the cross-beam above the windshield is also in black. The electrically powered "Panorama vent sunroof" can be pivoted upward by 40 millimeters.


Frameless doors, climate seats, new climate control system and new instruments


They include small details that have tremendous impact. Such as the unique guide system for the side windows in the frameless coupé doors, which do not offer any surfaces for the wind to catch hold. Extremely effective is the climate control feature for the car's seats (active climate seat). Until now this comfort feature was reserved for the Phaeton luxury sedan. In summer months the active climate seat provides for noticeably improved comfort on long drives. Also new is the entire climate control system ("Climatronic") of the Passat CC, whose visualization is now integrated in the display of the radio and navigation systems. There is also a new layout and design of the instruments with chrome bezels. Similar to the Phaeton, instrument markings and numbers are not backlit in blue, rather they glow in a white light. Sports car like: When the ignition is started the instrument pointers all briefly peg to their maximum positions.


New USB interface for iPod and Co.


Also newly developed is the "Media-In" multimedia socket. This USB interface can be used to integrate iPods and many other current MP3 and DVD players in the particular audio system installed on the Passat CC. The USB port is located in the glove box. Control is via the Passat CC's radio or radio-navigation system. Title information is also shown in the display.


Tires of the Passat CC "repair themselves"


Another prime example of perfect attention to the smallest details is the "mobility tire" from Continental being introduced for the first time on a Volkswagen; it is standard equipment in every Passat CC version. The German tire producer developed this technology, called ContiSeal, as a system that enables continued driving despite penetration by nails or screws: A protective layer on the interior surface of the tire tread area immediately seals holes caused by penetration of foreign objects. That way, no air can escape. The sealing process works for nearly any leaks caused by objects up to five millimeters in diameter. About 85 percent of typical flat tires can thereby be avoided.


Extensive standard equipment includes climate control and 17-inch alloy wheels


The Passat CC - which is intentionally offered in just one luxurious equipment variant - is positioned in the premium range of mid-class cars. Its extensive standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels ("Phoenix" type) with size 235 tires, chrome accents (interior and exterior), four ergonomic sport seats (individual seating system in rear), a new three-spoke leather steering wheel design, climate control, ESP electronic stabilization program and automatic headlamp switching.


Advance sales started in Western Europe; North America and Japan to follow in 2008


The core markets for the Passat CC are North America, Western Europe and Japan. This Volkswagen - built at the German plant in Emden - can already be ordered in most countries in Europe. Starting in the fourth quarter Volkswagen will also be introducing the Passat CC in the USA, Canada and Japan.


Overview of technological highlights on the Passat:


"Lane Assist": This active lane keeping system on the Passat CC automatically counter-steers as soon as it detects that the Passat CC could leave its lane unintentionally; a genuine gain in convenience and safety. About 14 percent of all accidents involving injuries are caused by the vehicle leaving its driving lane. "Lane Assist" can make a contribution toward reducing this accident rate. By the way, if the driver sets the turn signal to intentionally change lanes, "Lane Assist" does not intervene.


"DCC adaptive chassis control": The car's new "adaptive chassis control" system by Volkswagen combines the sportiness of a coupé with the comfort of a top luxury sedan in one car. In parallel to tuning of the suspension's damping characteristic, the power steering system is controlled too. "Adaptive chassis control" offers the three programs "Normal", "Sport" and "Comfort". Decisive here is the fact that the suspension system is constantly adapting to the roadway and driving situation and therefore continually improves comfort and dynamic properties.


"Park Assist": Another high-end technology is the "Park Assist" parking assistance system. It automatically guides the Passat CC into a parking space at the push of a button. The driver no longer needs to steer in this case, but instead just accelerates and brakes.


"ACC automatic distance control": When "ACC" is activated, the Passat CC automatically brakes and accelerates within a speed range (0 to 210 km/h) input by the car driver beforehand. Thanks to "Front Assist", the system can also prevent some cases of frontal collisions. In advance of certain situations, the system preventively puts the brakes in a preconditioned state, thereby functioning as a stopping distance reduction system ("AWV"). "Front Assist" also warns the driver of hazardous situations by visual and acoustic signals. Even more: If a minimum driving distance is not maintained, in extreme cases the system brakes the Passat CC to a stop ("follow-to-stop"). However, it does not relieve drivers of their responsibility and lets them intervene in the process at all times.

Volkswagen Golf 2009






Volkswagen is sending a new Golf out into the world, the best of all times. The Volkswagen Golf is a phenomenon, regardless of its particular generation. Positioned in the compact class, this style icon defies all automotive and social class distinctions. No other car in this price segment has even come close to reaching as large a cross-section of people. The Volkswagen Golf is the only one that always fits right, and the new one is even better fitting.


It was perfected in every detail. It is also the quest for perfection that has elevated the styling of the Volkswagen Golf to a new level. The team headed up by the Group’s chief designer, the Italian Walter de Silva, has succeeded in giving the Volkswagen Golf a presence, a sharpness, a power that generates even more fun. Fun to look at and fun to drive. An intelligent car. Data such as an average fuel consumption of 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers for a 110 PS TDI put fuel prices in their place. Upon request, the VW Golf can park itself nearly automatically in the city thanks to “Park Assist”, it can maintain an ideal gap on the freeway by distance control (ACC), and at the push of a button it can transform itself from a cruiser to a sports car when the new “DCC Adaptive Chassis Control” system is on board.


Above all, the car exhibits a standard of quality never before attained in this price class. Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board at Volkswagen AG sums it up: “This sixth generation of Volkswagen Golf cars will completely redefine the quality and comfort level of its class over broad categories, offering more customer value than ever before”. In Europe the new Volkswagen Golf will be introduced to the market in October. Following in succession will be Africa, Asia, Australia and North America.


Innovative force – the VW Golf democratizes progress


The clear and powerful styling of the Volkswagen Golf being offered as a two-door and four-door in the “Trendline”, “Comfortline” and “Highline” equipment lines is showing the entire brand the way to the future. The Volkswagen’s acoustic properties and overall comfort tear down class distinctions. Innovative engine and transmission technologies reduce fuel consumption by up to 28 percent. All gasoline and diesel engines fulfill emission limits of the future Euro-5 standard.


Assistance systems such as “ACC Automatic Distance Control” – as well as developments like “DCC Adaptive Chassis Control” (DCC) and “Park Assist” – bring additional top technologies to the Volkswagen Golf class. A new ESP system, with finer response over its control range, further optimized crash properties, seven airbags including knee airbag, the special head restraints (WOKS) that work to counteract whiplash trauma, a “seatbelt detection” feature debuting on the Volkswagen Golf in the rear seating area and daytime running lights – also standard equipment – provide for a maximum level of safety.


Exterior design – precision in a new form


The exceptionally high value of the new Golf is reflected par excellence in its stylish design; all key body elements were redesigned: “We have cast the Volkswagen Golf’s core components in a precise new mold”, explains Walter de Silva. And he emphasizes this: “The Volkswagen Golf is the global icon of car making. So the architecture and styling of new model are also absolutely clear and unique.” At the same time, the sixth Volkswagen Golf has a sportier and more distinctive image than any previous generation of the model series. De Silva: “It is more accentuated, more three-dimensional than its predecessor; with precisely defined lines and edges, and with finely proportioned flared surfaces and recesses.” And Klaus Bischoff, Chief Designer for the brand, adds: “Every detail is uncompromisingly aimed at improving value.”


Especially in a direct comparison of generations VW Golf V and VI, it becomes evident just how much the new Golf has changed. The design team – headed up by Walter de Silva, Klaus Bischoff and the Group’s director for creative design, Flavio Manzoni – crystallized out the Volkswagen Golf’s essential DNA and sent it on a trip to the future. Style features include the clarity of the first generation’s front end and the C-pillar that was perfected in the fourth generation.


The roof section now rests – similar to the new Volkswagen Scirocco – on a prominently contoured shoulder section. Responsible for this is a dominant curved line that – like a muscle trained down to the last fiber – extends from the headlights back to the taillights. This side profile line – which Volkswagen Design calls the “character line” – also gives the VW Golf a fuller, lower stance on the road from a lateral perspective.


All body surfaces are more relaxed, more athletic. In front the new car adopts the radiator grille of the first generation Volkswagen Golf that is horizontally aligned between the headlights; the grille itself is in high-gloss black. The lines of the bumper match those of the radiator grille. Beneath this is a section with another air scoop. Also presented over a black background are the chrome light housings of the dynamically styled headlamps.


The rear too is characterized by a predominance of horizontal lines. The taillights – now very wide – are marked among other things by an unmistakably unique night design. Stylistically, the crystal-clear line of turn signal and backup lamps bears a resemblance to the taillights of the Touareg. Overall, the new Volkswagen Golf – in the interplay of all of its design characteristics – gives the appearance of a significantly wider, flatter and higher end car.


Interior – imploding class distinctions


The car’s exceptionally high value also applies to the newly designed interior, whose refined surfaces and features completely transform class distinctions, both to the touch and visually, especially in the cockpit area. The appearance and layout of materials – as well as details such as brushed chrome accents and round in­struments and steering wheels derived directly from those of the Volkswagen Passat CC – leave the impression that one is actually sitting in a car of the next higher segment. Ergonomic properties of the car’s interior were also further developed. For example, all controls are even easier to use. They include controls for the automatic climate control system (Climatronic) being presented for the first time on the Passat CC, the new RNS 310 radio-navigation system with touchscreen and the power window controls that are now located further forward in the door trim, making them easier to access.


There is a common thread here: Volkswagen’s typical attention to perfection of every detail in the car. Take the example of “seatbelt detection” in the rear: if rear head airbags are ordered on the Volkswagen Golf, the driver can tell from the multifunctional display in the cockpit and an acoustic warning whether the occupants have their seatbelts fastened in the rear – separately for each seat. Or take the example of leather seats: a new, more robust leather is being used for the first time on the VW Golf. Or the cargo area: on the new Volkswagen Golf too, four practical hooks ensure that the contents of shopping bags are not strewn across the cargo area after shopping. Or the outside mirrors: thanks to their aerodynamically optimized shape they get significantly less dirty. They are easier to adjust from the inside, since the power mirror adjustment control is now located higher and further forward in the door trim.


Low-noise comfort – the quietest Volkswagen Golf since the model series began


The new VW Golf is characterized by first-class acoustic properties. A special sound-damping film in the windshield reduces driving noises, as does the newly developed seal design on the doors and side window guides. Significantly less wind noise is generated by the outside mirrors due to their new shape. Furthermore, special modifications were made to better isolate the engine and passenger compartments from one another acoustically. Quiet rolling tires and new engine bearings round out the noise reduction program.


Diesel engines – the shift to common rail injection


Making a significant contribution to the pioneering acoustic properties of the Volkswagen Golf are the exceptionally quiet common rail TDI engines being implemented on the Volkswagen Golf for the first time. Two balancer shafts (from 103 kW / 140 PS) also eliminate undesirable vibrations. Plans call for a TDI power range from 66 kW / 90 PS to 125 kW / 170 PS. Right at its market launch Volkswagen will be offering two 2.0 liter TDI engines on the Volkswagen Golf; they deliver 81 kW / 110 PS and 103 kW / 140 PS. Always there: a diesel particulate filter (DPF).


The new TDIs are exceptionally fuel efficient. The 110 PS strong diesel is satisfied with just 4.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (119 g/km CO2) – that represents a 0.6 liter reduction in fuel consumption! Even the 140-PS version only requires 4.9 liters of diesel (129 g/km CO2), which is 0.6 liter less than the on the previous generation.


Gasoline engines – more fuel efficient than ever before


In the launch phase, four variants will define the range of gasoline engines with 59 kW / 80 PS, 75 kW / 102 PS, 90 kW / 122 PS and 118 kW / 160 PS. Starting at 90 kW / 122 PS, TSI engines with supercharging and/or turbocharging are used. The fact is: the gasoline engines are also pioneers in economy. The optimized 80-PS entry-level engine consumes just 6.4 liters Super per hundred kilometers (149 g/km CO2) – that is 0.5 liter less than its predecessor. The TSI engines once again make their appearance as prime examples of efficiency: with 122 PS the new Golf 1.4 TSI consumes just 6.2 liters Super (144 g/km CO2); this represents a fuel consumption advantage of 0.1 liters. Even the new 160-PS top version of the 1.4 TSI achieves a top value at 6.3 liters. The 160-PS TSI’s fuel consumption too was lowered by 1.6 liters compared to the retired 150-PS FSI.


DSG – replaces conventional automatic


With the exception of the entry-level versions, all gasoline and diesel engines may be paired with Volkswagen’s dual clutch transmission (DSG). Either a 6-speed or 7-speed DSG is used, depending on engine torque. This means that on the VW Golf the extremely efficient and agile DSG has replaced the classic torque converter automatic. Just how economical the alliance of TSI plus DSG can be is demonstrated by the example of average fuel consumption on the 1.4 TSI with 160 PS and 7-speed DSG: 6.0 liters (139 g/km CO2). This high-tech duo replaces the 2.0 FSI with 150 PS and 6-speed automatic. Average fuel consumption there: 8.3 liters. Savings: 2.3 liters per hundred kilometers or 28 percent – progress at its best.

Volkswagen Gol (2009)






Now that more than 5.7 million cars have been made here, the Next Generation of the most successful automobile in South America for the last 21 years is being launched: the Gol by Volkswagen. This compact car, which is manufactured in Brazil, is precisely geared toward the local demands of customers in South America. Hence the Volkswagen Gol can be driven on any mixture ratio of gasoline and ethanol without the slightest loss of horsepower thanks to its Totalflex technology, like all the Volkswagen models made in Brazil.


President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was invited by Viktor Klima, VW's South America head. He was the first person to take a seat behind the steering wheel of the new Volkswagen Gol, as Garcia Sanz, member of the board of management, elucidated the main features and significance of this economical compact car: "It's simply a captivating automobile, which is going to write a new chapter in the success story of the Volkswagen Gol," Sanz said.


Lula da Silva recollected the beginnings of the bivalent Volkswagens, which are primarily operated in South America with ethanol made from sugarcane: "A couple years ago I was inaugurating the production of TotalFlex vehicles here. It all began with a few cars for a test phase, and nowadays nearly every single car in Brazil is running with renewable fuel."


Ulrich Hackenberg, member of the board of management for the Volkswagen brand, in charge of Technical Development, underscored Brazil's importance as a development location: "The New Volkswagen Gol's design and technology were conceived here; this Volkswagen, like every other model we make, stands for topmost quality as well as technological innovation." Thomas Schmall, President of Volkswagen do Brazil, particularly extolled the commitment of all the employees at the two plants at Anchietá and Taubaté. "The Volkswagen Gol is a goal that's shot for Brazil," said Schmall, in a reference to the soccer world.


Europe's largest car manufacturer has been active in Brazil since 1953. It produces automobiles, buses and heavy trucks as well as engines and gear boxes at five locations, employing about 21,000 people. 18 million vehicles have rolled off their conveyor belts since then. In the 1970s Volkswagen was the first automobile manufacturer that, in conjunction with Brazilian engineers, locally developed vehicles for the regional South American markets. Volkswagen provides the greatest variety of all car manufacturers in Brazil, offering 17 models, and maintains a network of about 600 dealers.


Brazil is the second largest foreign market for the Volkswagen Group after China. Last year the corporation sold 581,300 vehicles here, 32 percent more than in 2006. VW do Brasil is not merely one of the largest privately held companies in Brazil but operates as automobile supplier for all of South America as well. Twelve percent (744,200 vehicles) of all deliveries of the Volkswagen Group were accounted for in this region in 2007.

Volkswagen Touareg R50 (2008)







In a world premiere, Volkswagen will be presenting the Volkswagen Touareg R50 on October 11 at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. Its power of 258 kW / 350 PS (at 3,500 rpm) positions the new Touareg version among the most powerful SUVs in the world. The Volkswagen Touareg R50 can be ordered in Germany at prices starting at 88,260 Euro; it will be introduced to the market this November.


The engine characteristic of the Volkswagen Touareg R50 is marked by a torque level nearly unattainable by the competition: The V10 TDI of the Volkswagen Touareg R50 develops its enormous power of 850 Newton-meter at a low 2,000 rpm. The turbo diesel was derived from the well-known ten cylinder with 230 kW / 313 PS. Adjustments to its turbo charging and modified engine management enabled a 28 kW / 37 PS increase in power and a considerable 100 Newton-meter increase in maximum torque. Under these new parameters, the SUV accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds (production car: 7.4 seconds); its top speed is 235 km/h. In relation to engine power and vehicle size, the fuel consumption of the production ten-cylinder diesel equipped with a particulate filter is a moderate 9.6 liters per 100 km (highway) and 12.6 liters per 100 km (overall). Despite big gains in power and torque, its DIN fuel consumption values have remained constant compared to the Touareg V10 TDI.


In keeping with the performance potential of the R50, Volkswagen Individual designed new exterior and interior features according to the R philosophy. From the outside, the new Volkswagen Touareg R50 is easy to recognize with its 21-inch Omanyt type alloy wheels and size 295 tires, blue painted brake calipers, discrete wheel well flares, side skirts and distinctive bumpers (Sport Design Package), as well as a modified radiator grille (in a matte finish chrome).


Offered exclusively on the Volkswagen Touareg R50 is the car color "Biscay blue". Blue hues of this type have been typical of the high-powered R models since the first Golf R32 was introduced in the year 2002. Offered as optional car colors on the Volkswagen Touareg R50 are "Campanella white", "Reflex silver", "Black Magic" and "Atacam gray".


The car's extensive features also include an air suspension sport chassis: The so-called "Driving dynamics package with adaptive roll compensation" and chassis lowered by twenty millimeter supplements the "Sport" mode of the manually or automatically controlled air suspension by achieving a stiffer spring rate.


On the inside, the SUV's features include a sport seating system in anthracite-colored nappa leather with R50 logo integrated in the headrests. The logo was also integrated in the stainless steel tread plates. Also in keeping with the sporty character of the Touareg is the light-colored "engine spin" decor of the interior - a metallic structure similar to that previously used on race cars - as well as metal worked caps for the accelerator and brake pedals. A R50 logo also decorates the gearshift lever of the six-speed automatic transmission (Tiptronic). Standard features the Volkswagen Touareg R50 also include a winter package (including seat heating for the rear seats), the Premium Memory Package (including electrically adjustable seats, steering column and seatbelt height), net partition behind the rear seats and a ski sack.

Volkswagen Touareg BlueTDI (2008)




On its new Touareg Volkswagen is introducing one of the cleanest diesel engines in the world: The BlueTDI with SCR catalytic converter. This converter reduces nitrogen dioxide (NOx) emissions by up to 90 percent. The Touareg BlueTDI, that delivers 165 kW / 225 PS, meets even the most challenging exhaust emissions standards. Currently, the lowest limits are set in the US states California, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont and Maine: In the "Tier2 Bin5" standard. The Touareg BlueTDI being presented in Geneva is one of the first vehicles with a diesel engine that can clear this hurdle too. Especially in the USA, economical turbo-diesels like the V6 BlueTDI can contribute, more than any other current powertrain technology, toward reducing oil consumption and the generation of climate-impacting greenhouse gases.


Therefore, Volkswagen will be offering the Touareg with SCR catalytic converter starting in 2008, initially in the USA, as part of the BlueTec Alliance started together with Audi and DaimlerChrysler at the end of last year. Also slated for 2008: The company for smaller vehicles like the Jetta will introduce, in America, a NOx storage catalytic converter that eliminates up to 90 percent of nitrogen oxides. The two technically challenging systems are scheduled to debut in Europe a short time later.


The Euro-4 standard currently specifies a NOx limit of 0.25 g/km here. The US standard, which the Touareg BlueTDI satisfies, specifies among other things a NOx limit of 0.043 g/km (0.07 g/mile).


SCR (SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION) CATALYTIC CONVERTER


SCR is the usual international acronym for "Selective Catalytic Reduction". "Selective" refers to the fact that this catalytic converter has a very special task. Its purpose is to selectively convert the nitrogen oxide (NOx) exhaust components to nitrogen and water without generating any undesirable side products. It was developed precisely for this highly specialized task. Therefore, in the future vehicles such as the Touareg BlueTDI, being shown for the first time in Geneva, will also be equipped with an oxidation catalytic converter and a diesel particulate filter.


The nitrogen oxides are converted utilizing a synthetically produced, water-based urea solution, e.g. AdBlue, which is stored in an auxiliary tank on the Touareg BlueTDI. The substance, consisting of 32.5 percent urea, is continuously sprayed into the exhaust stream before the SCR catalytic converter. It is metered based on the mass flow of the exhaust. Engine management ensures precise regulation, based on information from a NOx sensor located after the SCR catalytic converter.


Atomized into a fine spray by a screen, the urea is transformed in the hot exhaust gas stream upstream of the catalytic converter. In the SCR catalytic converter this reacts with the nitrogen oxides and splits them, as described, into nitrogen and water. The water-based additive AdBlue is non-toxic, odorless and biodegradable.


AdBlue is consumed at an average rate of about 0.1 liter per 100 kilometers. Consumption and tank size are sized so that the AdBlue supply does not need to be replenished until the next scheduled service.


INTERNAL ENGINE MODIFICATIONS


Besides introducing the SCR catalytic converter, the engineers at Volkswagen Automotive Group have put together an entire bundle of innovative modifications. Combustion chamber sensors are being implemented for the first time; they monitor pressure conditions in the cylinders. And a new common rail system with 2,000 bar injection pressure atomizes the fuel even finer. The ideal combustion achieved by these measures enhances smooth engine running and lowers overall raw emissions.


In the effort to reduce emissions, especially NOx raw emissions, efforts being made in internal engine modifications include measures to lower maximum temperatures in the combustion chambers and to reduce oxygen concentration by exhaust gas recirculation. Nitrogen oxides generated despite these measures are fed to the new SCR catalytic converter and are removed, as outlined above.


COMBUSTION CHAMBER SENSOR AND COMMON RAIL IN DETAIL


As engineers began to develop the BlueTDI, their first goal was to achieve further overall combustion optimization in the engine. The world premiere of such an innovation is being celebrated in the BlueTDI - the combustion chamber sensor. Integrated in the glow plug, the sensor continuously measures pressure conditions in the cylinder and reports the data to engine management.


This enables perfect control of injection and combustion in each cylinder; it is even possible to compensate for fluctuating qualities of fuel. Ideal combustion helps to reduce raw emissions. It also optimizes smooth running and noise behavior.


The intensively refined common rail injection system serves the same purposes. With a newly designed pump, the system builds up 2,000 bar of pressure - also an innovation. The piezo injectors have been significantly modified too. Their smaller eight-hole nozzles inject miniscule spray volumes into the combustion chambers. This, together with the higher pressure combine to produce an injection that is even more precise and dynamic - detailed work that as a whole has resulted in one of the most economical and cleanest six-cylinder diesel engines in the world.


VOLKSWAGEN BLUEMOTION PARK


To point out its activities in the area of environmental protection, Volkswagen has set up a BlueMotion Park at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. At numerous exhibits and interactive information terminals on technological highlights visitors can experience how Volkswagen technologies are preserving the mobility of today and tomorrow. Key topics addressed here are engines, transmissions, synthetic fuels, lightweight construction and aerodynamics. Exhibits relating to BlueTDI systems are another focal point: The SCR catalytic converter for larger vehicles like the Touareg, and the NOx storage catalytic converter such as the one Volkswagen introduced for the first time in a Jetta test car.

Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line (2008)




Just three weeks after market introduction of the Tiguan, Volkswagen is presenting the sporty R-Line equipment packages for the new SUV at the Essen Motor Show. They consist of an interior package and an exterior package. Since R-Line equipment takes a dynamic approach, it is exclusively available on the Sport & Style version of the Tiguan.


A key visual feature of the new Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line: the "Omanyt" type alloy wheels. The 19 inch wheels are equipped with size 255/40 R19 tires. Moreover, the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line is easy to recognize by a whole series of specific body modifications. Volkswagen design developed all body parts in parallel to overall vehicle development, and so it was possible to work them into the style on the new SUV in an especially homogeneous way.


Interior upgrades of the Tiguan "Plus" R-Line package include sport seats (front) with R-Line logo embossed in the headrests and "Monte Carlo" fabric design, multifunctional leather steering wheel, also with R-Line logo, and aluminum pedal caps. Leather sport seats are also offered as an option.
