The new Opel Insignia Sports Tourer showcases the dynamic look of the new Opel midsize class in the station wagon segment and reflects this in its name. Two new engines for the entire Opel Insignia class also make their world premiere at the Paris Motor Show (October 4 - 19). The innovative 2.0-liter BiTurbo diesel with clean tech combustion system has 190 hp, and the downsized 1.6-liter gasoline turbo engine reaches 180 hp. The Opel Insignia Sports Tourer offers the same state-of-the-art technology as the Insignia, including the Opel Eye camera system, AFL+ headlamps, Adaptive 4x4 all-wheel-drive and the FlexRide chassis. This is complemented by station-wagon-specific equipment such as a power tailgate with programmable opening height, a leveling system and the FlexOrganizer cargo management system. The completely flat luggage compartment has a capacity of 540 to 1,510 liters. With a cD of just below 0.30, the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer is the most aerodynamic station wagon Opel has ever built.

The Opel Insignia Sports Tourer addresses a younger target group than the sedan. It is the ideal choice for families and sporty, active people who desire a wagon for their leisure activities and sports equipment, but who don't want to give up the elegant style, superb driving characteristics and low fuel consumption of a midsize car.

The new Opel Insignia Sports Tourer will be introduced to European markets in spring 2009. Opel expects the Sports Tourer to take a high share of sales in strong station wagon markets like Italy and Germany. Like the sedan models, the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer was developed in GM Europe's Design and Engineering Center in Rüsselsheim. It will also be built in the Rüsselsheim plant, one of the most modern and efficient plants in the world.

Sporty design, unprecedented aerodynamics for maximum efficiency

While designers carried forward the sporty, elegant design of the Insignia to the Sports Tourer, they spared no effort in giving the largest Insignia its own unique look. Mark Adams, Vice President of GM Europe Design, says, "This vehicle has its own very unique personality, while still remaining consistent to the new design language that we have developed for Opel, where Sculptural artistry meets German precision. It combines the perfect balance of a practical package wrapped in a dynamic, sporty design."

The result is a dynamic, sporty station wagon that elegantly conceals its high utility value. To achieve this, the designers reinterpreted a number of elements. They pulled the "wraparound" tailgate far into the flanks and accentuated it with large, distinctive, fully integrated tail lights. The chrome strip holding the prominent Opel logo gives the car a note of added confidence.

The rear sweeps down into a rounded bumper, emphasizing the aerodynamic framework that underpins the car's design. The roof spoiler has the same effect, elongating the dynamic sloping roofline that is accentuated by roof rails and thus helping to ensure that the Insignia sedan's sporty proportions are retained with the Sports Tourer. Also, the air is guided longer along the roof reducing the drag. Two vertical fins that bridge the roof spoiler and the rear lights have the same effect. The air flow is sharply cut off which also reduces rear end lift.

As in the Insignia sedan, GM Europe engineers fine-tuned the subtlest details to ensure excellent aerodynamic performance. These include rounding the front bumper corners and adding a flexible spoiler lip to its bottom end, giving the A-pillar a rounder shape, changing the exterior mirror to a wing form, and profiling the lower control arm in the rear suspension. Two underbody spoilers direct air over the rear axle to reduce drag and lift even more, while the three front air inlets have been optimized for efficiency. With a cD of just below 0.30, the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer is the most aerodynamic station wagon Opel has ever built. With a drag area of 0.69 m², it is better than many smaller cars.

Interior: Plenty of space and practical features like the FlexOrganizer system

The new station wagon's dynamic look encloses an interior that offers ample space for five occupants and a highly competitive luggage compartment that offers a volume of 540 liters. The Sports Tourer has retained an identical wheelbase of 2.74 meters as the sedan models and added around eight centimeters to its rear cargo length for an overall 4.91 meters. The load area length up to the front seats is 1.91 meters and when fully loaded, the sporty station wagon has a maximum capacity of 1,510 liters.

The Sports Tourer combines sporty looks with the space and functionality of conventional wagons. The automatic leveling system is just as practical as the closing support for the manual tailgate which pulls the tailgate into the lock when closing; both items are fitted as standard. Also available is a tailgate that can be electrically opened and closed and features a programmable opening height that helps prevent damage to the tailgate even in garages with low ceilings. Added to that are clever ideas such as the familiar FlexOrganizer system that separates and secures cargo loads: A flexible system of nets and foldaway dividers can be fixed to two horizontal rails running along each side of the load area. The host of stowage possibilities in the passenger cell, that are also a feature of the sedan, include molded-in pockets in the front doors that can each hold a 1.5-liter bottle.

With the new Sports Tourer comes a new seat material that is an automotive industry first: It uses "TopTec" nano-technology to help textile upholstery resist staining and prevent liquids from penetrating it, therefore is up to 50 percent easier to clean that conventional upholstery. TopTec material, available with the beige interior, is as breathable as conventional material and makes it easier for families with small children to choose interior trim with friendly, light-colored upholstery.

Nine Engines Available

Two new engines make their premiere in the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer, and join the seven engines already available for the sedan models. The 2.0-liter BiTurbo diesel with 190 hp and the 1.6-liter gasoline turbo with 180 hp will then also be available in the sedan versions. Both engines are part of Opel's rightsizing strategy. This strategy aims to achieve higher performance not through higher displacement, but rather to increase the efficiency of smaller engines with the help of state-of-the-art technology to such a point that they at least rival larger engines in terms of performance, torque and drivability while at the same time consuming considerably less fuel. In addition to these nine engines, an ecoFLEX variant with remarkably low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions will also be introduced in the course of next year.

Strong and innovative: The new 2.0 CDTI BiTurbo

The new 2.0-liter CDTI BiTurbo will top the diesel engine family available in the Insignia. With two-stage turbo-charging and clean tech combustion control, it produces 140 kW/190 hp at 4,000 rpm, which corresponds to an excellent power output per liter of 70 kW/95 hp. The maximum torque is 400 Nm at an exceptionally low 1,500 rpm.

The innovative clean tech technology that controls combustion via an electronic closed loop system makes its debut in the common-rail four-cylinder engine. Pressure sensors integrated in the glow plugs are used to measure combustion pressures as high as 180 bar in each individual cylinder up to one million times per minute, within an accuracy of 98 percent. The data is sent to the central engine control system and the fuel injection continuously adjusted. This closed loop system ensures the engine always operates within an optimum range for maximum power output and minimum exhaust emissions, improving efficiency and lowering combustion noise. Long-term stability of the combustion process is another advantage of pressure measurement with the piezo-resistive sensors. Over the service life of the engine, it compensates for wear factors such as inaccuracies in the fuel metering, component tolerances, varying fuel qualities and operating conditions.

The two-phase turbocharging concept ensures a good response at low engine speeds, as well as maximum power output values. Two turbochargers, one small and one large, are connected in series and controlled by a combined throttle system. Up to 1,500 rpm, the exhaust gases only pass over the turbine in the small, low-inertia turbocharger, which forces air into the cylinders at up to 3.3 bars pressure. When engine speed increases, part of the exhaust gas flow is diverted to the large turbine so that both turbochargers become active. Pre-compressed in the large turbocharger, the air is led into the small turbocharger via an intercooler and then forced into the cylinders in a highly compressed state. At engine speeds above 3,000 rpm, the entire exhaust gas flow is directed to the larger turbo, from where the compressed air is forced into the cylinders via the intercooler.

A third generation, common-rail injection system - working at pressures up to 2,000 bars - is another special engine feature. In hydraulic cutting technology, for example, 2,000 bars is sufficient pressure to cut stainless steel blocks up to a thickness of 15 centimeters. In the Opel diesel engine, the high-pressure rail system delivers fuel through high-precision, piezo electrically-controlled injector nozzles which allow up to eight injections per stroke, enabling extremely precise combustion control in terms of noise and exhaust emissions.

An oxidation catalyst, located close to the engine and a standard particulate filter provide after-treatment of the exhaust gas. As with all Insignia engines, the new, highly efficient diesel unit is Euro 5 certified.

Efficient and sporty: The new 1.6 Turbo with 180 hp

The new 1.6-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine in the ECOTEC series also uses turbocharging. It delivers maximum power of 132 kW/180 hp and generates peak torque of 230 Nm from just 2,200 rpm all the way to 5,400 rpm. On top, the standard overboost system delivers a temporary 15 percent torque increase, up to 266 Nm, as required. Electronic control allows a maximum charge pressure of 2.5 bars for up to five seconds, compared to 2.1 bars in normal running. The overboost function is activated when the accelerator pedal is rapidly pressed down all the way.

The cylinder head, oil sump and intake manifold, with a laterally-mounted throttle valve, are all in aluminum. The integration of the turbocharger housing in the cast exhaust manifold - a typical Opel feature - optimizes weight-saving and ensures a rapid response. The turbocharger is water cooled and was developed by Opel in collaboration with specialists from BorgWarner Turbo Systems. It is distinguished by refined flow geometries, improved materials and increased durability.

The compact 1.6 turbo engine is only 15 kg heavier than its naturally-aspirated counterpart, tipping the scales at just 131 kg. It has a bore/stroke ratio of 79/81.5 mm and displacement of 1598 cm3, top values in power-to-weight ratio (1 kg per 1 kW), specific power output (82.5 kW/112.5 hp per liter displacement) and specific consumption: At 2,000 rpm and a charge pressure of two bars, it consumes only 406 grams of fuel per kilowatt hour. This engine also is certified according to the stringent Euro 5 emissions standard.

Developed for front and all-wheel-drive, the chassis is designed to offer a high level of safety and comfort. It can even be enhanced with the innovative, integrated FlexRide mechatronic chassis system which improves stability and provides real time, electronically controlled damping. FlexRide also gives the driver the choice between three driving modes. In addition to the standard adaptive mode, the driver can either opt for a comfort-oriented mode Tour or Sport setting. The Sport mode makes the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer driving experience more active, as it changes the set-up of interlinked functions such as the steering, throttle control and even the ambient lighting of the dashboard. Furthermore, Insignia customers can order the new, sophisticated Adaptive 4x4 system that proactively distributes torque to ensure superb stability while providing optimal traction and enhancing handling performance on all road conditions.

The "Opel Eye" camera, which reads and memorizes traffic signs and warns drivers when they unintentionally veer out of their lane, also increases safety in the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer. Other innovative features are the new-generation AFL+ headlamps that adjust to prevailing traffic conditions with nine different lighting functions and the particularly back-friendly, orthopedic Ergonomic Sport Seats that are offered at a very affordable price.

Opel will showcase to the public for the first time at the British International Motor Show (July 23 - August 3, 2008) both the four-door notchback and five-door hatchback versions of its new flagship car, the Insignia.

The new Opel Insignia highlights breathtaking design: Both body styles boast a flowing, muscular yet elegant silhouette with a coupé roofline. Designers of the new car deliberately created similar versions to retain the beauty of Opel's latest mid-sized car. The length of both the notch and hatchback, at 4,830 mm, and the wheelbase of 2,737 mm remain the same.

The Insignia's fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and driving dynamics benefit from the aerodynamic efficiency that was perfected during more than 650 hours in the wind tunnel. The result: A class-leading drag coefficient of 0.27.

Offering both the notchback and hatchback from the start is particularly important for markets such as the U.K. and France, where 5-door sedans traditionally enjoy a high market share of the mid-size class segment. German and Spanish customers, on the other hand, generally prefer notchback sedans. Prices for the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria and Switzerland will be announced July 22 in London and cars will hit German dealerships before the end of the year. Opel expects both models to sell in about equal numbers.

From the beginning, the Insignia will be launched with a broad line-up of motors. Seven engines will be available; all meet Euro 5 emissions standards and come coupled with six-speed transmissions. The four gasoline engines range from a four-cylinder 115 hp unit to a V6 with 260 hp. Three new direct-injection turbo-diesels exclusively developed for the Insignia feature a displacement of 2.0 liters and power outputs spanning from 110 to 160 hp.

The newly developed chassis can be enhanced with the innovative, integrated FlexRide mechatronic system, as well as the sophisticated Adaptive 4x4. Its lightning-fast distribution of torque over the four wheels ensures top stability and traction while improving dynamic handling performance.

The Opel Insignia elegant styling can be summed up as sculptural artistry meets German precision - a mantra that will be chanted in Opel models moving forward. With the Insignia, Opel successfully has brought the sporty coupé design to the mid-size sedan class without making any concessions in interior space. The Insignia offers three centimeters more knee room than the Vectra. The car also proves to be particularly efficient aerodynamically with a spectacular Cd of 0.27 which positively influences the economic, dynamic and acoustic qualities of the car. Both body variants have identical 4.830 mm length and share the same wheelbase of 2,737 mm.

The new car will hit dealerships in Germany before the end of 2008 and other markets as of January 2009 with a line-up of seven engines. All meet Euro 5 emissions standards and come with six-speed transmissions, either manual or automatic. The four gasoline engines range from a four-cylinder 115 hp unit to a V6 with 260 hp. The three new direct-injection turbo-diesels exclusively developed for the Opel Insignia feature displacement of 2.0 liters. Powerfully Sculpted Lines Give Opel Insignia its Dynamic Look

The design of the new Opel Insignia signals a paradigm shift for Opel by adding emotion back to the brand. Both the notch and hatchback of Opel's new car feature a flowing, muscular silhouette with a sporty roofline. The designers created a powerfully sculpted shape for the body and used the same design cues in the interior, giving the Insignia a premium feel.

Opel has a long successful tradition of building very aerodynamic cars. Just remember the spectacular 1990 Calibra and its Cd of 0.26. With a drag coefficient of 0.27, the Opel Insignia is more streamlined than competitors with underbody shields. The Insignia's fuel consumption and driving dynamics benefit from its sleek, flowing styling which was optimized during more than 650 hours in the wind tunnel.

In addition to its slipstream body shape and sporty roofline, the Opel Insignia boasts numerous details that were fine-tuned for even better aerodynamic performance. These include the front bumper corners, trunk lid spoiler edge, the exterior mirror's wing form and the profiled rear axle's lower control arm. The future ecoFLEX version designed to produce low CO2 emissions also will benefit from further developments.

Redefined design vocabulary

Like the signature crease on the hood, a blade form has been chiseled into the side, signposting a styling element that becomes another defining characteristic of future Opel cars. Other unmistakable design elements include a distinctive radiator grille with a newly-designed Opel emblem as well as sweeping front and rear light forms. The dynamic tapered shape of the wing lighting signature is another Opel Insignia DNA detail.

"We have redefined our design vocabulary. Our philosophy behind the new Insignia is 'sculptural artistry meets German precision,'" says Mark Adams, Vice President of Design for GM Europe. "We have created beautiful, sculptural, fluid shapes, which are accented by crisp intersecting lines. This makes the Opel Insignia muscular, sporty, yet very elegant and graceful. It was designed to add emotion back into the Opel and Vauxhall brands."

Echoing the exterior design, the shapes and surfaces of the interior also articulate this promise of exciting mobility and are crafted with high quality materials. The new car's dashboard wraps around from the instrument panel to the door in a very sophisticated way, embracing the occupants. The bold exterior "blade" graphic is echoed in the shape of the interior door grab handle, the steering wheel or the central gear-shift lever.

The designers focused on painstakingly refining the surfaces, carving the crisp intersecting lines and colors; testing the textures, feeling the materials and ensuring all the surface finishes were of the highest quality. At the same time, practical needs - such as good ergonomics and numerous storage compartments - also were given top priority. The orangish-red ambient light that warms the interior also will be found in future Opel models.

Powertrain

The new Opel Insignia launches with a exceptionally broad range of seven engines that all meet Euro 5 emissions standards. The four gasoline engines range from 115 to 260 hp completed with three new 2.0 liter turbo-diesels featuring power outputs of 110, 130 and 160 hp. In the coming months, the powertrain range will be expanded with new, more powerful motors. In addition, an ecoFLEX version with especially low CO2 emissions will join the lineup. In each of their respective power output category, these engines are among the best or the best in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The three diesel and four gasoline engines all come with a six-speed manual gearbox. The top diesel and gasoline units also are available with a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive (see chassis chapter) versions, too, can be ordered with the 2.0 Turbo and 2.8 V6 Turbo gasoline engines and later with the more powerful diesel engines.

The 2.0-liter turbo is new in the Opel mid-size class segment. The 220 hp direct-injection engine is closely related to the sporty unit in the Opel GT. The all-aluminum engine is a powerhouse generating 350 Nm of torque from 2000 to 5200 rpm, with twin balancer shafts to ensure smooth running. Offering strong power allied to economic fuel consumption, it makes a perfect partner for the dynamic, comfortable Insignia. This engine also illustrates the downsizing policy at GM as this 2-liter 4 cylinder can compete with the competitors 5- and 6 cylinders in performance but with lower fuel consumption and emissions.

The entry level gasoline engines are the 1.6 ECOTEC (85 kW/115 hp) and 1.8 ECOTEC (103 kW/140 hp) recently introduced on other models of the Opel range. The top of the line gasoline engine is the 2.8 V6 Turbo developing a generous 191 kW (260 hp) and 350 Nm of torque between 1800 and 4500 rpm.

All gasoline engines feature camshaft phasing - on both intake and outlet sides for the four cylinder units, and on the intake side for the V6. Variable valve timing increases torque at low rpm and plays an important role in reducing fuel consumption as well as meeting new Euro 5 emissions standards.

Opel Insignia Diesel Engines

The new-generation Opel diesel engines in the Insignia feature 2.0-liter displacement, more power and torque, as well as excellent fuel economy. The Opel Insignia launches with 3 versions of the 2.0 CDTI engine developing respectively 81 kW/110 hp, 96 kW/130 hp and 118 kW/160 hp. This last engine variant also powers the Opel Insignia ecoFLEX with lower fuel consumptions and CO2 emissions. All versions come with a maintenance-free diesel particulate filter as standard and meet Euro 5 emission levels.

The engines have two overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and common-rail, multiple fuel direct injection, together with a variable geometry turbocharger for a rapid throttle response at low rpm. Thanks to the large 70-liter tank, the diesel models boast a driving range of over 1200 km between visits to the gas station.

Adaptive Chassis Enhances Driving Dynamics

Together with the option of tailoring the riding experience for added fun, the new Opel Insignia's chassis concept offers more comfort for all. Drivers can individualize their chassis and suspension setup in one of two ways: Either with a generally stiffer suspension available in combination with the sport equipment package or with the new generation fully-integrated adaptive suspension control, FlexRide.

At the press of a button, FlexRide, developed by GM Europe engineers in Rüsselsheim, Germany, allows the driver to choose a dynamic and sporty ride or a relaxed and soft setup in addition to the standard mode, which adapts itself to all driving styles. This provides optimal stability in all driving conditions. The FlexRide alters the characteristics of the dampers, gas pedal, ESP and steering, and, if applicable, also changes set up of the all-wheel drive set up, the curve light function of the AFL and automatic transmission, adding emotion to the driving experience.

An all-new chassis serves as a platform for this more advanced customization option. The McPherson strut front suspension has dual path top mountings in the body structure turrets, separating the transfer of spring and damper loadings. To reduce unsprung weight, the combined steering knuckle and strut carrier is made from aluminum, and the stabilizer bar in hollow section steel.

Steering and lower suspension A-arms are attached through two mountings to a substantial front sub-frame, which is bolted via four bushings to the front structure's longitudinal members. This isolated mounting technique helps reduce the transfer of road shocks and noise to the cabin. The hydraulic damping of the rear A-arm mounting also adds to ride comfort. The rear suspension consists of an independent, four-link layout, with the second lower link in aluminum. For all-wheel-drive applications, a lower H-arm is used.

To enhance handling characteristics and ride comfort, the suspension geometry and the tuning of the bushings strategically is designed to optimize the different levels of lateral and longitudinal compliance required. The rearmost bushings of the A-arms also are hydraulically damped to help prevent road shocks and vibrations from being transmitted to the steering wheel.

FlexRide: Customizable mechatronic chassis

The new FlexRide system enables drivers to choose a chassis setup that matches their own particular driving style. In addition to the comfortable Standard ride setting, FlexRide enables the driver to select a relaxed (Tour) or a firmer, more crisp suspension set-up (Sport) by pressing two buttons on the instrument panel. Deactivating the Sport or Tour mode returns the ride setting to the Standard mode. In all modes, the chassis management system automatically adapts damping in real time to the driving and road conditions.

In Sport mode, FlexRide provides a spirited driving experience. With the push of a button, the dampers stiffen and the accelerator offers a swifter pedal response. Moreover, it increases Variable Effort Steering (VES), raises the shift-points of the automatic transmission to a higher rpm and adjusts the Adaptive 4X4 system for more rear-wheel drive. In sport mode, the AFL system reacts more quickly. In addition, the lighting on the instrument panel changes from white to red to add to the driving experience.

In the customization menu, accessible via the infotainment display, the driver can personalize the Sport mode by specifying which functions are activated when the Sport button is pushed. For instance, the electronically controlled dampers, VES, and all-wheel drive can be added or switched off.

The core of the new chassis is the Driving Mode Control (DMC), This unit oversees and executes FlexRide selections allowing the car to react to sudden changes in driving style or emergency situations. For example, if an obstacle must be avoided when the car is in 'Tour' mode, various chassis sensors convey this to the DMC and the dampers are adjusted within a split second. The mode requests are not only based on the driver's selection via the buttons and the customization menu; they can also be automatically optimized according to vehicle state --including accelerating, braking, or cornering -- and driving style which DMC determines from vehicle dynamics information.

With the exception of the entry level gasoline and diesel variants, all Opel Insignia models can be ordered with the new FlexRide system, which comes as standard with the Sport equipment package and the V6 gasoline engine.

Adaptive 4X4: More traction, exciting driving dynamics

Both of the Insignia's turbocharged gasoline engines are available with the newest-generation advanced all-wheel-drive system. The all-wheel drive system also will be available on future, more powerful diesel versions. Called Adaptive 4X4, it is designed to optimize handling and driving stability in all conditions, as well as increase traction at take-off and on slippery surfaces. Under electronic control, the Haldex hydraulic rear clutch unit continuously adjusts and optimizes drive torque distribution between the front and rear axles.

The Adaptive 4X4 control unit is fully networked with the Insignia's other control systems. It consists of a Power Take-off Unit (PTU) in the front final-drive that transmits engine torque through a prop-shaft to the Rear Drive Module (RDM), which includes a Torque Transfer Device (TTD) and the optional rear Limited Slip Differential (eLSD).

Adaptive 4X4 processes signals from the ESP sensors, the steering angle sensor and accelerator pedal position to adapt power distribution to the prevailing driving situation. While offering better traction in low friction conditions, the sophisticated operation of the Adaptive 4X4 improves stability in all situations. In this way, it adds a further dynamic dimension to the driving experience by increasing the scope for closer driver involvement.

In the Sport variant, Adaptive 4X4 is coupled with an electronically-controlled eLSD. Chassis control is taken a step further with the optional rear eLSD. It is installed alongside the RDM and operates via pressurized clutch plates on a principle similar to the larger TTD. In icy or wet split-friction conditions, for example, it uses input from the rear wheel speed sensors and can transfer up to 50% of torque between the drive shafts, to whichever wheel has more grip.

The eLSD also gives the driver enhanced control when cornering hard or completing a high speed maneuver, such as a lane change, by momentarily applying more or less torque to either of the wheels to help the rear of the car more closely follow the direction of the front wheels. That way, the eLSD can keep the Opel Insignia better balanced and more tightly controlled without requiring 'outside' intervention from ESP.

Innovations Increase Safety and Comfort on Opel's Newest Car

Innovative features in the new Opel Insignia are designed to increase safety and comfort as well as enhance driving excitement. The Insignia offers leading technology in driver assistance systems. Moreover, the latest generation of lighting provides nine different light beam settings to help drivers adapt to diverse driving conditions. The re-designed seats are good news for sore backs.

Following the unique knowledge acquired since summer 2003 when the first generation Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL) was introduced on the Signum, Opel now presents in the Insignia, the latest generation AFL system with powerful bi-xenon headlamps. Using sophisticated algorithms developed in Rüsselsheim, the light beam distribution of the headlamps automatically adjusts to the road profile and prevailing visibility conditions. The Opel Insignia offers nine light beam settings -- town, traffic-restricted road, country, highway, adverse weather, static cornering, dynamic curve, high beam and daytime running light - increasing visibility and making driving safer.

Another new element in the Opel Insignia is the front LED daytime running lights, which consume considerably less energy, and thereby fuel, than using normal headlamps. The wing-shaped signature light graphics in the front and the rear give the Insignia a distinctive look both day and night.

Opel Eye: Reads road signs, warns sleepy drivers and improves safety

Opel offers another leading technology in the Insignia: The Opel Eye, a camera that aids drivers in two different ways. The Traffic Sign Recognition function reads speed limit and no-passing signs and displays them on the instrument panel. The Lane Departure Warning alerts drivers when they unintentionally veer out of their lane. Together, these two integrated systems improve driving safety, reduce stress and can even prevent costly speeding tickets.

The Opel Insignia can detect road signs and lane markings thanks to a high-resolution wide-angle camera mounted on the windshield, which takes 30 pictures per second. Those images are then filtered by two signal processors with the help of proprietary GM software. If a match occurs, the speed limits and no-passing road signs are displayed as a symbol in the center of the instrument panel between the main round dials. The information can be recalled with the push of a button situated on the steering wheel.

The camera also checks whether drivers stay in their chosen lane on the highway. This helps prevent a dangerous situation such as drivers falling asleep at the wheel by warning them with a gong sound and a blinking signal on the instrument panel. The Lane Departure Warning and Traffic Sign recognition systems can be deactivated via a button on the steering wheel.

These new features enhance driving excitement by informing drivers without intervening in the driving experience.

New Seats: More comfort and optimal ergonomics

GM Europe engineers in Rüsselsheim have used the most up-to-date technology to develop new front seats for the new Opel Insignia, improving safety as well as comfort and posture -- an area often neglected although it plays a major role in the occupant's health. Petite and large drivers alike will find Insignia's seats safe and comfortable thanks to the extended range of settings. They have a height adjustment range of 65 mm. Moreover, at 175 mm, the seat back is two centimeters thicker than previous Opel cars, adding a plushier feel.

On Sport seats, occupants with long legs can extend the length of the front seats cushion up to three centimeters by a pull-out front section. They can also tilt the cushion by three degrees. A four-way lumbar support is standard in the sport seat, while power adjustment and fan ventilation are optional. Engineers have greatly enhanced the ventilation operation helping to lower noise level and improved performance from a suction-based design. The new Opel also features newest-generation active head restraints as standard, providing front occupants with highly effective protection against whiplash injuries.

The orthopedic benefits of the sport seats were awarded a much coveted seal of approval from Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V - an independent panel of ergonomics experts and doctors in Germany.

The Insignia's heavily contoured rear seats also offer excellent lateral body support. For the first time in an Opel, the outer rear seat backs can be optionally fitted with side airbags for additional passenger protection.

Tailor-made Driving Excitement Easier with Wide Array of Options

With innovative features like the Opel Eye camera system as well as a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art infotainment and communication systems, the new Opel Insignia is designed to bring excitement back to the driving experience. Customers can tailor the new car to their needs and desires with four different trim levels and a wide palette of options.

With its four equipment variants - Essentia, Edition, Sport and Cosmo - the new Opel Insignia meets every comfort level. In addition to extensive standard equipment that concentrates on safe driving, many options are new or represent an Opel "first" in this class.

The new Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL) generation with nine light beam settings allows driving with ease in diverse conditions. Rear side airbags and two driving safety devices - Traffic Sign Detection and Lane Departure Warning - called the Opel Eye make driving safer.

The new infotainment generation includes a seven-inch color monitor, 3-D map view, digital travel guide and improved scroll and zoom functions. In addition, all trim levels include as standard iPod or MP3 USB ports with the navigation system in the center console. The monitor gives improved access to MP3 files and directories and the iPod interface uses iPod functions such as track list.

Accessing these functions is easier through a multi-function controller, also new for the Insignia. In conjunction with the CD 500 Navi and DVD 800 Navi systems, the controller uses a turn/push selection action that is located on the center console between the front seats (in combination with the electric parking brake). It is a particularly convenient alternative for tall drivers who sit well back in their seats. All the functions are the same as those on the lower rotary knob in the audio unit.

Four trim levels to meet every taste

High quality begins with the Essentia entry level trim. Here you will find chrome features with real metal feel. The metallic decor is called Rapid Cool; the Jet Black fabric has a calm, classic labyrinth pattern. The Essentia offers generous standard equipment, including front, side and curtain airbags, Isofix on all three rear seats as well as ABS and ESP. Comfort items include manual air conditioning, an audio CD 300 system, power outside mirrors, split rear seat back (60/40), a board computer, electrical seat height adjuster for the driver as well as reading spots in the front and rear.

The Edition is available in two seat trim colors, Jet Black or Light Neutral. Dune fabric features a pattern inspired by organic graphics in home interiors. Optional leather seats are available in Black or Light Neutral. Metallic decor Rapid Cool contains a subtle pattern that harmonizes with the fabric. This version features additional standard items like single-zone electronic climate control or cruise control. On the Edition execution, the Opel Insignia rests on 17" structure wheels with 225/55 tires, compared with 16" steel wheels and 215/60 tires on the Essentia.

Piano Black decor in the Sport trim level creates a stark, modern Black/Silver contrast for an eye on sophistication. The Vitesse fabric elicits a strong structured impression. Sport seats have adjustable leg extension. A sport steering wheel and alloy-covered pedals are standard. Optional Sport Leather seats with ventilation are stylized, giving a very detailed and tailored look. The Sport version gains a sport chassis that is 15 mm lower than other trim levels, the FlexRide adaptive suspension, 18" alloy wheels with 245/55 tires and speed sensitive steering.

Top level Cosmo is available in two seat trim colors of Jet Back or Light Neutral. Avenue fabric is a soft flock yarn, very tailored and trimmed with Morrocana. The décor is called Kibo Wood and is a modern approach to a sophisticated classic wood. Optional leather seats in Black or Light Neutral are available. User friendly dark carpet interior color lay-out creates a modern look for a non-traditional warm interior. With fresh design accents and three additional engines, the new Opel Zafira will be available at dealerships from February 2008. The Zafira's striking looks communicate dynamics and self-confidence. Its 1.6-liter gasoline and two 1.7-liter CDTI engines embody the current trends: powerful, economical and affordable. This all puts the Opel compact van in an excellent position to continue the success story of the world's first fully versatile seven-seater, which will see its two millionth unit rolling off the assembly line early next year. Following the introduction of the second generation in mid-2005, this Zafira also belongs to the top of its vehicle class with over 450,000 units sold and around ten percent market share in Europe. The new edition of the bestseller makes its world premiere at the Bologna Motor Show (December 7 - 16, 2007).

Alain Visser, Chief Marketing Officer of GM Europe, describes the new Zafira as "the right offer at the right time. We know that customers are very satisfied with its quality, reliability, functionality and versatility. And now we've made the Zafira even sportier and equipped it with more efficient engines. This all keeps the Zafira in benchmark position in the European compact MPV class."

Dynamic V-styling defines face

The new Zafira is characterized by striking front and rear design elements that give the car a sporty note. The confident wide front chrome beam with integrated Opel logo takes the hood tapering and draws it into the two-part radiator grille fins, which are now fully chromed. The distinctive lines around the fog lamp recesses also integrate the bumper into the dynamic V-styling; headlamp housings are also in chrome-look. The Zafira Sport boasts an even more impressive look with its bold, full front lip. The resulting sweep continues from the flared wheelarches, over the side sills to the pronounced rear apron. Other new eye-catching features include two transparent 3-D cells in the red tail lamps. The design enhancement is rounded off by the rear lamps' silver-white strip, which crosses over into the rear chrome beam.

The further refined interior is accentuated by glossy chrome-rings around climate and radio controls as well as new decorative trim on the instrument panel and doors. The Cosmo version features elegant piano lacquer trim on the center console and decorative molding on the steering wheel. The infotainment systems with Navi, CD, DVD and MP3 functions also have stereo connections for external audio equipment, such as an iPod.

The Zafira's "trademark" Flex7 seating system is of course always on board. The unrivalled versatile system ensures fast reconfiguration of the interior without cumbersome removal of the seats.

New engines

The motto for engines is higher economy and power. With a new 1.6-liter gasoline and two 1.7 CDTI common-rail turbo-diesel engines, the range now boasts further highly-efficient propulsion alternatives. In future, Zafira customers can choose from a total of nine different engines. Their output spectrum ranges from the 94 natural gas hp of the especially economical and environmentally-compatible Zafira 1.6 CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) to the 240 turbo hp of the sporty top model Zafira OPC. With these two engines, Opel also enriches the segment with two innovative variants: the natural gas Zafira with only 138 g CO2 paved the way for this alternative form of propulsion, while the OPC version with 240 hp took over the pioneer role for sport vans.

The Zafira model line's favorable operating costs result from a number of factors including low fuel consumption, low maintenance requirements, long service intervals and above all high value retention. This all helped the Opel van to take first place in the "Best Value 2006" awards in specialist magazine "Auto Bild".

The new, weight-optimized 1.6 TWINPORT ECOTEC with seamlessly controllable intake and exhaust camshafts has output of 85 kW/115 hp. The four-cylinder, four-valve unit replaces the 77 kW/105 hp 1.6-liter engine and consumes just 7.0 liters of fuel per 100 km. This reflects a savings of 4.3 percent compared to the predecessor. At the same time, better driving performance can be achieved thanks to the increased power, which is reflected in the 9 km/h higher maximum speed and acceleration of 13.4 seconds from zero to 100 km/h.

The new 1.7 CDTI engines with 81 kW/110 hp and 92 kW/125 hp both come with six-speed manual transmission as standard and feature common-rail injection, four-valve technology with swirl control as well as maintenance-free diesel particulate filter. They replace the 74 kW/100 hp 1.9 CDTI and the manual gearbox version of the 88 kW/120 hp 1.9-liter diesel. With increased torque of 20 and 40 Nm respectively, the 1.7 CDTI units provide noticeably more power while consumption and emissions are reduced. Efficiency is increased by up to 5 percent. Both diesel units require 5.7 liters of fuel per 100 km and emit just 152 g CO2 per km.

Technological excellence

The new edition of the Zafira also offers innovative technological highlights unique in this vehicle class. These include the optional IDSPlus chassis system with electronic CDC (Continuous Damping Control), which provides an exclusive dimension of driving comfort and safety. In this integrated chassis control system, the control units and sensors of ESPPlus, ABS and CDC exchange data constantly, resulting in immediate optimization of chassis fine-tuning. The new edition's further improved trailer stability control is also far from a matter of course when looking at other brands. The sophisticated system monitors the intensity of yawing motions in the car-trailer combination. Such motions are stabilized by control electronics via regulated brake application.

Best-in-class Zafira: Opel introduced the AFL bi-xenon headlamp system (Adaptive Forward Lighting) with dynamic curve light into the compact van segment. The panorama roof system is a true highlight, further enhancing the pleasant, light atmosphere for the passengers. The power-operated shading system protects against strong sunlight when needed. For practical organization in the interior, the roof console running down the length of the ceiling houses five large drop-down storage compartments. These innovative technological features underline the modern overall concept of the flexible compact van.

The Opel Meriva Concept, due to be unveiled at the 78th International Motor Show in Geneva (March 6 - 16, 2008), illustrates how the new Opel design language can be adapted to create bold, fresh design solutions for this segment.

The Opel Meriva Concept takes flexibility to new heights with its innovative FlexDoors system, which consists of rear-hinged rear doors that swing open toward the back of the car. As the B-pillars have been purposely retained for passive security reasons, the Meriva Concept's front and rear doors can also be opened independently of each other. Other rear-hinged rear doors already on the market can only be opened after the front door has been opened. This innovation makes access to the car interior much easier and also offers a range of safety benefits over conventional car doors. In the Meriva Concept, this innovation is combined with the highly variable FlexSpace rear seating system familiar from the production Meriva.

The FlexDoors system also enhances comfort and functionality, as the highest point of the roof - just behind the B-pillars - is exactly where the passengers enter and exit the vehicle. This architecture enabled designers to create a very dynamic and unique silhouette, with the arched roof line sloping down to the C-pillars.

Especially eye-catching is the dynamic "wave" in the window line just behind the B-pillars, which provides an excellent all-round view for rear passengers, particularly for children. The body also boasts the distinctive "blade" bodyside form, which was a design element of the GTC Coupé and Flextreme. Another feature is the U-shaped windshield, which stretches up and back over the rear passengers' heads - echoing the Astra GTC's panorama windshield. The slim A-pillars and windshield pulled far down ensure plenty of light and a spacious interior atmosphere. Both elements contribute to the outstanding all-round visibility for the occupants.

Opel is shifting into top gear with the new Opel Corsa OPC. Following the sensational market launch of the Opel bestseller's fourth generation, the OPC version is now the quintessential expression of the Corsa's dynamic character. Top-level agility and vehicle control ensure pure Opel Corsa driving fun. Its 1.6-liter turbo engine with 141 kW/192 hp accelerates the compact three-door from zero to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds and enables a top speed of 225 km/h. The maximum torque of 230 Nm is delivered to the front wheels by the standard six-speed transmission. In addition, the standard 'overboost' system can temporarily increase torque by around 15 percent to 266 Nm when required, providing a corresponding dynamics increase. This level of performance provides the newest member of the sporty OPC family, which now includes six models, with superb propulsion power in all driving situations. For instance, accelerating from 80 to 120 km/h takes just 6.7 seconds in fifth gear. The Opel Corsa OPC requires 7.9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, a moderate figure in this performance class.

Design: Reminiscence of motor sport vehicles

The sporty lines of the three-door Corsa are even more striking in the OPC variant. The roof spoiler, as well as the powerful front and rear aprons with distinctive gills make the OPC a real eye-catcher. Elements such as the darkly contrasting diffuser with integrated, centrally located triangular tailpipe and specially designed exterior mirrors are just a few examples of how much attention to detail was put into further developing the Corsa's bold, sporty character.

Sportiness also dominates the Opel Corsa OPC's cockpit. In addition to the typical OPC door sills, chrome-ringed instruments with red pointers and − depending on upholstery color − blue or silver-ringed air vents, the flat-bottomed leather sports steering wheel is especially eye-catching. Also reminiscent of motor sport vehicles, the steering wheel features a ring at its crown, while the center console in piano lacquer finish and aluminum pedals underline the sporty, high quality ambience. The sports seats with integrated head restraints are a joint new development by Opel and Recaro. These race-car-like seats provide optimal side support and protect both the driver and front passenger with integrated side airbags, which are integrated into the seat back − a first for a series production folding body-contoured seat.

Chassis tuned on Nürburgring Nordschleife

The Opel Corsa OPC's chassis has a unique, even sportier character thanks to extensive modifications. Through intensive tuning drives on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, engineers were able to achieve a sophisticated balance of agile handling and pronounced vehicle control. Key modifications include a stronger rear axle profile, which increases the roll rate by 25 percent, new spring/dampener tuning and a lowering of the body by 15 mm. The standard ESP system, which can be deactivated, has also been tuned to the car's sporty character. The new Opel Corsa OPC comes with 17-inch alloy wheels with 215/45 R17 tires ex works, while 18-inch rims and size 225 tires are available as an option. The large 16-inch brake system with blue painted brake calipers ensures strong deceleration: the Opel Corsa OPC boasts internally ventilated, 308 mm front disk brakes and 264 mm disk brakes at the rear.

Variable-progressive steering for sports car feeling

A unique feature for this class is the Opel Corsa OPC's variable-progressive steering, which provides a true sports car feeling. With a ratio of 13:1 during straight-ahead driving, the system response is already very direct. As the turning angle increases, so does the level of direct response, so that by 90 degrees the ratio is at 11.9:1. The variable progression also ensures that the response ratio increases again at greater steering-wheel angles to up to 13.1:1, reducing the effort needed for maneuvering or parking.

Broad range of OPC models

The introduction of the Corsa expands Opel's OPC program to six models. The top-of-the-line Vectra OPC with a V6 turbo and 206 kW/280 hp is available as a sedan or station wagon. The Zafira OPC − the fastest production van in the world with a top speed of 231 km/h − and the Astra OPC both have a 177 kW/240 hp, two-liter turbo engine. The Meriva OPC is powered by an engine similar to that of the Opel Corsa OPC: with 132 kW/180 hp and a top speed of over 220 km/h, the versatile five-seater is unique in the minivan segment. "The OPC models are high-performance cars that infuse the brand with emotion and passion. That is why the OPC version fits brilliantly to the new Corsa, which is positioned as a young car offering plenty of fun," says Alain Visser, Executive Director, European Opel Marketing.

Design: Expressive Styling with a Passion for Geometry

The OPC model range has never been so wide and varied. This gave the design team the opportunity to design an extraordinary car with the Opel Corsa OPC. OPC Designer Ulli Hochmuth − responsible for shaping Opel's sportiest cars since 1999 − says, "The Corsa OPC is aimed at a considerably younger target group than most of its model family. That's why we styled the Corsa's sporty lines to be more expressive. We wanted to create an unmistakable driving machine."

Powerful front and rear aprons with distinctive gills give the compact, bold-looking sporty car a powerful stance, while the rear spoiler and darkly contrasting diffuser in the rear bumper ensure good looks and downforce. The front and rear are united by a sporty modeled side sill and as in other OPC models, the color-keyed crossbar is a distinctive characteristic of the radiator grille.

Attention to detail was just as important for the designers as the expressive styling, which is apparent from the repeated use of the triangle. In the Opel Corsa OPC, designers make use of this shape in a variety of places: from the radiator grille structure and the fog lamp frames to the perfect, centrally located triangular tailpipe integrated in the rear bumper. The two clips on the unique, thin exterior mirrors form a triangle and the spokes on the special, finely crafted 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels are also triangular. Even the rubber grips on the aluminum pedals are easily recognizable as Opel Corsa OPC parts.

Chassis: Thorough Sporty Tuning On the Nürburgring

Pure driving fun was at the top of the agenda during the Opel Corsa OPC chassis' design. The sporty, compact car therefore boasts an appropriately sophisticated balance of agile handling and pronounced vehicle control. The technology team, consisting of specialists from series production and special vehicle development, used the Corsa Sport's technical basis to develop an even sportier setup, assisted by Lotus Engineering experts. The base tuning was set on the test course in Idiada, Spain, and then development moved to the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Five test cars with various fine-tunings were compared by experienced chassis engineers. Racing car driver and brand ambassador Manuel Reuter was also a regular test crew member. The data obtained from the circuit was continuously checked for its everyday suitability on the Eifel Mountains' country roads around the Nürburgring, and there were also calibration drives at Opel's test center in Pferdsfeld. The final check was an endurance test of a special kind: over just ten days, the Opel Corsa OPC had to prove its durability with a 10,000 kilometer hardness test on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Key elements of the OPC's chassis, which has been lowered by 15 mm compared to the base Corsa variants, include a stronger rear axle profile that increases the roll rate by 25 percent. The spring/dampener tuning was adjusted accordingly and an optimum characteristic chosen for the gas-pressure shock absorbers. The standard ESP system, which can be deactivated, was also tuned to the car's sporty character. The new Corsa OPC comes with 7 J x 17 alloy wheels with 215/45 R17 tires ex works, while 7.5 J x 18 rims and size 235/35 R 18 tires are available as an option. The large 16-inch brake system with blue painted brake calipers ensures strong deceleration: the Opel Corsa OPC boasts internally ventilated, 308 mm front disk brakes and 264 mm disk brakes at the rear.

This not only improves the engine's maximum power output, but also its propulsion power. The maximum torque of 230 Nm, available across a wide range between 1980 and 5850 rpm, is delivered to the front wheels by the standard six-speed transmission. In addition, the standard 'overboost' system can temporarily increase torque by around 15 percent to 266 Nm when required, providing a corresponding dynamics increase.

These elements all combine to give the most compact OPC model driving performance like a sports car. The turbo engine accelerates the Corsa from zero to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds and enables a top speed of 225 km/h, while quick intermediate sprints highlight the high level of torque: accelerating from 80 to 120 km/h takes the three-door car just 6.7 seconds in fifth gear. The Opel Corsa OPC requires 7.9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, a moderate figure in this performance class.

The clever, light construction is a distinguishing characteristic of the standard engine. Including the aluminum bearing cover, the grey cast iron block weighs only 27 kg. Using this material also saves on extensive, heavy noise reduction measures around the engine.

The cylinder head, sump and turbo-specific induction manifold with side-mounted throttle valve in the Opel Corsa OPC are all made from aluminum. The turbocharger housing is integrated into the cast exhaust manifold − an Opel-typical design and optimal for the turbocharger's weight and fast reaction. The water-cooled turbocharger was developed jointly by Opel and specialists BorgWarner Turbo Systems (previously KKK).

It boasts refined stream geometry, improved materials and a longer service life. At 131 kg, the high-performance engine is extremely light and only 15 kg heavier than the aspirated variant. New turbo engines from competitors in this displacement class are up to 15 kg heavier.

The four-valve engine's valve timing has also been optimized. Compared to the aspirated engine, the camshaft spread was decreased from 232° to 223° and the valve stroke reduced from 8.5/9.5 mm to 7 mm, as the maximum overpressure of 1.3 bar from the turbocharger automatically ensures good charge. With a cutoff rpm of 6500, the direct valve travel via flat-base tappets is weight and friction optimized.

With a bore/stoke ratio of 79/81.5 mm and 1598 cm3 displacement, the compact OPC engine provides top performance in terms of specific output (88 kW/120 hp per liter of displacement) and specific torque (144 Nm/liter). The unit is also well suited for the future. The upstream catalytic converter and the new engine control unit used in hybrid technology already meet the requirements for the upcoming Euro 5 emissions standard. The requirements for natural gas (CNG) and biofuel (alcohol) operation were also taken into consideration during design.

Seats: Sporty Body-Contoured Design, New Geometry

With plenty of side support − the most important element of any sport seat − ideal suitability for long journeys and high levels of seating comfort for passengers of all statures, the Opel Corsa OPC's front seats are truly multi-talented. Developed jointly by Opel and Recaro, they not only look like race-car seats, but are also based on a plastic shell. The advantage of this design is that contouring and pressure distribution can be better controlled than in conventional, mass-produced, steel-framed passenger-car seats. Corsa seats are produced by a thermoplastic injection molding process, with glass fibers to reinforce the plastic.

The integration of head restraints and side airbags ensures a high level of safety. Corresponding cutouts in the seat backs allow four-point safety belts to be retrofitted. There is no reduction in the level of practical suitability, as the new OPC seats feature the familiar Easy-Entry function for trouble-free access to the rear. Height adjustment is fitted as standard, as are heated seats for the optional full nappa leather interior.

The new seating geometry combines good side support with a comfortable sitting position. "We designed the seat surface so that it's narrower at the rear for a good body posture and wider at the front so the legs have plenty of room," says Armin Roßmann, Design Engineer. The shape was designed with the help of the computer-based human model RAMSIS. Ergonomics and long-journey suitability were assessed by seat specialists in a range of different practical tests. These included using sensors in the prototype cars on long trips to objectively determine whether the driver sits comfortably in one position or not. If the driver then keeps the position over long distances, the ergonomics are ideal.

The new OPC seat passed this test with flying colors, as well as another obligatory check: employees of different statures tried out the seat on special stretches of Opel's test center in Dudenhofen. They then gave marks for criteria such as entry, seating position, cornering and lumbar support. The side airbags in the Opel Corsa OPC's sport seats are also an innovation. A joint development by Opel and Recaro, they are integrated into the seat backs − a first for a series production, folding body-contoured seat.

The theme of the new Opel Corsa GSi is 'more substance than show'. In contrast to the Opel Corsa OPC, which was launched a few months ago, the new GSi radiates subtle sportiness rather than uncompromising high-performance, and will be unveiled at the Barcelona Motor Show (June 7 - 17, 2007). The GSi's powerful 1.6 ECOTEC turbo engine produces 110 kW/150 hp at 5000 rpm, positioning the new sporty model between the Corsa Sport 1.7 CDTI (125 hp) and the high-performance Corsa OPC (192 hp).

"We're pleased to launch another model, with the legendary GSi heritage. Opel fans know just what the three letters GSi stand for: plenty of fun, good value for money and no compromises in everyday use or driving conditions," explains Alain Visser, Executive Director European Marketing Opel. "The Corsa GSi combines the virtues of its compact dimensions with impressive performance over the entire rpm range, which actually positions the model in the next higher car class." The addition of the GSi to the Corsa model line expands the range to five gasoline and three diesel variants with a performance spectrum of 60 to 192 hp. Over 320.000 new Corsas have been sold across Europe since the fourth-generation's launch in October 2006.

Corsa GSi customers have the choice of a three or five-door variant. Powered by the 1.6-liter turbo gasoline engine, the new Corsa has a top speed of 210 km/h and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds. The Electric Power Steering (EPS) with variable progressive feedback curve and lowered sport chassis (front: 18 mm, rear: 15 mm) with ESP as standard ensure agile handling.

The Opel Corsa GSi's styling is also subtly sporty, with exterior modifications such as a front spoiler lip, rear apron lip and spoiler, color-keyed side sills, chrome sport tailpipe and 17-inch alloy wheels. The interior's dynamic ambience is emphasized by the comfortable, charcoal/red upholstered sport seats with high side support, a leather steering wheel with red inserts, red safety belts and aluminum-style pedals.

With five doors and five seats, the new Opel Agila is not only as practical as its predecessor, which sold over 440,000 units, but is now also much more dynamically designed. The small, versatile Opel was unveiled to the public at the 2007 IAA in Frankfurt (September 13 - 23, 2007) and made its market premiere in spring 2008. It boasts balanced proportions, soft curves and a distinctive side graphic. Its passengers still sit high and upright, but the roofline has been dynamically lowered and now blends into a smooth arc toward the rear. This helps create the Opel Agila's aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.35 - a relatively low figure for a vehicle of this size. The urban car is now 20 centimeters longer, six centimeters wider, but seven centimeters lower than its predecessor.

The front boasts typical Opel styling. With its round headlamps integrated into almond-shaped lamp units that echo the new Corsa, the Opel Agila sees the world through wide eyes. The tapering of the front and rear bumpers are also typical Opel elements, just like the crease in the hood. The rear also features several rounded details. The positioning of the narrow vertical light units, which are accented by the spherically styled rear lights, allowed designers to create a large, easy load-through tailgate.

The same is true for the interior: the boring days are over. A wide selection of fresh colors and modern styles create an ambience that's enhanced even more by the spacious headroom. The versatile five-seater's high seating position ensures good visibility, while the high placed gear stick and height-adjustable steering wheel with radio remote controls ensure easy operation. The rev counter is housed separately on the instrument panel. All other information readouts are given on large, distinctive, round instruments.

As an urban car it also offers plenty of compartments and boxes for storing all passengers' belongings. But it's not just car essentials that the new Opel Agila stows away easily. Despite its compact exterior dimensions, the new Opel urban car boasts a surprisingly large luggage compartment. Its standard capacity up to the luggage compartment cover is 225 liters, large enough for a stroller, for example. One turn of a handle drops the rear bench seat back, increasing the load volume to an impressive 1050 liters - a top value in this segment. The rear bench seat and back also splits 60:40 for even greater versatility.

All Opel Agila models have a wide range of standard equipment, including safety features such as ABS, front and side airbags for driver and front passenger, front passenger airbag deactivation and mountings for the ISOFIX child seat system. And thanks to the five doors as standard, small children can be secured into a child seat quickly and safely. Standard comfort features in the entry-level version include speed-dependent power steering, height-adjustable driver and front passenger seats, rear window washer with interval selection and power tailgate with touchpad. The Enjoy model boasts an even greater range of standard features.

Two gasoline engines make their world premiere in the new Opel Agila. Supplied by cooperation partner Suzuki, they share the same design - aluminum cylinder block and head, as well as two overhead camshafts.

The entry-level unit is the almost one-liter, three-cylinder gasoline engine. The four-valve unit produces 65 hp (48 kW) and has a top speed of 160 km/h. The 1.2-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine produces 86 hp (63 kW), accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in less than 12 seconds and has a top speed of 174 km/h (values for five-speed manual version). This engine is now optionally available with a four-speed automatic transmission - an especially attractive alternative for city driving.

The fuel-saving master among the Opel Agila engines is the 1.3-liter common-rail turbo-diesel. Developed by GM Powertrain, the diesel engine is a true multi-talent and also offers an especially efficient alternative in the Corsa and Astra model lines. In the new Opel Agila it produces 75 hp (55 kW), has a top speed of 162 km/h and a zero to 100 km/h sprint of 13.5 seconds. The powerful diesel unit with a maximum torque of 190 Nm is very economical: on average it consumes less than five liters per 100 km, which represents a CO2 per kilometer value of under 130 g (finalized values not yet available).

Make the Opel Agila even more agile - that was the aim during chassis development. The new dynamic look is also reflected in the car's responsiveness. The Opel Agila's chassis, which features A-arms and McPherson struts in front and a torsion beam axle in the rear, is tuned for driving fun. Depending on the market and equipment variant, the Opel Agila also features an Electronic Stability Program (ESP).
