FERRARI P4/5 BY PININFARINA: A DREAM COME TRUE
A coach-built car for collector James Glickenhaus
What better place for the debut of Pininfarina's new creation than the most elite Concours d'Elégance in the world. The Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina is a one-off commissioned by James Glickenhaus, the American collector with a yen for the legendary racing cars of the Sixties.
The car has been designed, engineered and built entirely by Pininfarina, bringing to life something that, just a few months earlier, was just a dream and creating a sort of symbiosis between the customer and Pininfarina along the path leading to definition of this extraordinary model. Starting from a Ferrari Enzo, the aim was to produce a unique vehicle inspired by sport racing cars with extreme vocations: not just a show-car but a vehicle to be enjoyed on the road.
After freezing styling with various touch-ups to the initial sketches, the surfaces were defined using CAS modeling, then moving on to actual construction and assembly.
More than 200 components were specifically developed through constant interaction between styling and design: from the bixenon lighting clusters specifically designed with an innovative system of yellow and white leds to the alloy wheels - 20-inch aluminum - milled from the block, up to and including the aluminum and special steel in-sight hinges.
The sleek lines of the vehicle, characterized by a soft muscular touch, took shape on the body - made entirely of carbon fiber.
The tapered profile of the nose highlights both its aerodynamic function and the car's new look; the central body is dominated by the single-shell windscreen, while the car is accessed via two butterfly type doors.
The rear features powerful sides with the embedded teardrop type transparent rear window which also acts as engine cover and from which ceramic-coated exhaust tips peep out, as on racing cars of the Sixties. "The entire vehicle - stresses Ken Okuyama, Director of Pininfarina Styling - expresses elegance and fluidity with the clear-cut, uncluttered lines that are typical of Pininfarina's style. Our designer, Jason Castriota, succeeded very effectively in interpreting this approach to the project".
Considerable attention has been dedicated to aerodynamics with continuous testing at the Pininfarina Aerodynamic and Aeroacoustic Research Center of Grugliasco (Turin, Italy) in an effort to reach the highest levels of performance combined with perfect functionality of all the appendices integrated in the body of the vehicle.
"Each of these projects - comments Paolo Garella, Head of the Pininfarina Special Projects Division- represents an exhilarating challenge ,i.e. trying to meet the Customer's requirements in the best way possible without undermining the company's approach based on elegance and innovation".
It is important to stress how re-styling was not restricted only to the outside of the car but continued also when defining the interior, completely redesigned according to the customer's indications.

Ferrari 360 Modena (2001)
Ferrari 360 Modena was unveiled at the 1999 International Geneva Motor Show. Styled by Pininfarina, the all-aluminium 360 Modena has been designed to represent the ultimate in performance, lightness and advanced engineering and is the result of four years intensive research and design. This 'small' Ferrari incorporates superb handling due to a revised suspension system, excellent interior space with an exceptionally refined cabin layout. Powered by a normally aspirated, 400 hp, 3.6-litre, 40-valve, 8-cylinder engine the 360 Modena was available with the second generation of the highly successful F1-type gearbox as well as the conventional six-speed manual transmission.
This car had a significant part to play in the Ferrari model mix and will sit alongside the Ferrari 550 Maranello, the Ferrari 456M and the Ferrari F355 Spider. Offered as a two-seater sports car, the Ferrari 360 Modena replaced the highly successful and internationally acclaimed Ferrari F355. This addition to the Ferrari range was expected to account for 65% of Ferrari's annual production of around 3500 cars. The Ferrari 360 Modena initially went on sale in some of Ferrari's 42 key markets in Spring 1999. The car was available throughout the international Ferrari sales network by the Summer.
Many of the technical features and the build processes to create the Ferrari 360 Modena are unique to Ferrari and this car promises to be one of the fastest and most powerful GT road cars ever to be produced at Maranello. Luca di Montezemolo, President of Ferrari SpA, said: "In the past six years, Ferrari has launched no less than 10 different models and variants. This is a fantastic achievement and reflects Ferrari's continual efforts to be at the leading edge of technology and engineering design. "The Ferrari 360 Modena again represents a major step forward for us. It incorporates all of the traditional elements of the Ferrari marque but sets new and significant standards for high performance cars. The Ferrari 360 Modena is one of the most technically advanced cars that we have ever produced.".
Equipped with a 400-bhp 90° V8 engine, the Ferrari 360 Modena and the Ferrari 360 Spider are a winning concentration of high technology, style and performance. The extruded aluminum chassis, the special attention paid to detail in ensuring a roomy and comfortable interior and, in the Ferrari 360 Spider, the innovative soft-top opening system are some of the key reasons for the cars' success.

Aussie Poles Ferrari 360 Modena, Manages to Escape Unhurt...
You'd think that owning a $250,000 AUD Ferrari would at least make you a bit careful but apparently that wasn't the case with the Australian owner of this five-year old 360 Modena. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the Italian supercar turned the quiet streets of the Australian town of Walkerville into a racetrack before a telephone pole reminded him of his whereabouts. Surprisingly, even though the pole sliced the front end of the 360 Modena in half reaching into the cabin area, both the driver and his male passenger managed to walk away from the accident suffering only minor injuries. Talk about being lucky...
